    Pirates signed Bedard!

    Pirates To Sign Erik Bedard

The Pirates have agreed to sign lefty Erik Bedard, MLBTR has confirmed.  Canadian journalist Marc Brassard first tweeted news of an impending $4.5MM deal.

Bedard, 32, is coming off his healthiest season since 2007.  This year for the Mariners and Red Sox he posted a 3.62 ERA, 8.7 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 0.97 HR/9, and 42% groundball rate in 129 1/3 innings.  He missed time with knee and lat sprains, which wasn't too bad after shoulder surgeries limited him to 164 innings for 2008-09.  The signing has upside for the Pirates, who needed some depth after losing Paul Maholm to free agency.  Additionally, Charlie Mortonhad hip surgery in October and could miss the start of the season.

Well, Boston isnt going to offer him alot of money.  So he went for more money.  4.5 mm is pretty alot compare to Boston who could possible just give him 1.5mm

Still he havent been a proven pitcher for a couple years.

...another pitcher softy wanted to offer "$1M plus incentives" for...gone for over 300% of his offer.

Guys, there are no $1M bargains out there. When people laugh off the idea of Wake for $1.5M, they should look at oiur budget and then look at what the options are to fill 4 pitching slots with about $5-6M.

Boston isn't going to offer anyone a lot of money.  They will not exceed the luxury tax limit no matter what and that is the bottom line.  Sign Papi and there will be very little left for anyone else.

    Re: Pirates signed Bedard!

I see no term was listed. 2 years would take it from absurd to questionable.  Any team signing Bedard for more than 1 year and 1 to 2M plus incentives is desperate and will regret. That still leaves a half dozen other dumpster profiles who will bite at 1 to 2M plus incentives.

No team would be more desperate and insane than to offer Tim Wastefield 1 or 2M for what amounts to a 45 year old T-Ball pitcher with a giant beer gut. Bedard at 1 year and 4M is insane, but to even mention Wastefield beyond a near minimum Paul Byrd minor league contract is grounds for involuntary commitment.

Moon - It's not a money issue. It's the fact that having a knuckler on your team doesn't help the catching situation. You always point out how much Salty got worse down the stretch, which he did. How much is contributed to having to catch the bugs bunny knuckler that Wakefield throws.

And if he's so cheap at $1M, where are all the other teams banging on his door at $2M???????? Nobody wants him.

Name them, so when they all sign for about $4M, I can continue to expose your silliness.

Of course, who wants a 45 year old T-Ball pitcher with a giant beer gut. Ladies softball teams would not want Wastefield.

I already named 9 veterans on the market to offer 1  to 2M plus incentives major and minor league contracts. Miller was one. Bedard and Wang finding an InEsptein leaves 6 more dumpster profiles. Wastefield is a graveyard profile.

So, now you blame Salty's pitiful defense on Wake? Good one!

Despite what many and you think ---- every stolen base is because of the pitcher.
If a catcher gets to 25% CSB be very thankful.
As for your comment about Salty's pitiful defense please check the numbers before you damn anyone.
He caught 37 steals and had 83 not caught which gives him a .692 record or 31% caught in 101 games. Based upon the ones that caught 100+ games Salty is ranked 6th.
He had 26 PB. Wakefield had 15 WP most on the RS and since we know Salty caught Wake we can surmise most of those PBs came with Wake pitching. BTW the numbers prove this.
He had 6 Es which is average for the 100 club.
He is ranked 13th in Fld% of the 20 100+ game catchers at .992 which is .003 from number one.

    Re: Pirates signed Bedard!

Should Wakefield be given another 1 year deal ?    Most fans will say no but it shouldn't come as an absolute shock if he's given a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training by Cherington with attempts to make the team when the new season starts.
The name of the game these days is to sign 'em on the cheap.
