Look, a lot of Bill's threads and comments are vacuous and repetitive and tedious (occasionally he has a good one liner or a baseball insight). But everyone piling on him is not helping. Some people are posting comments that are just calling Bill names, and add nothing else--I'm looking at you Bogey.
It really should stop. If you don't want to read his threads don't click on them. But really, what you want is a convenient punching bag to make yourselves feel smarter. Everyone knew that Ortiz thread was pointless, but you all clicked on it so you could post something about how stupid you think Bill is. That's the bigger problem right there. It bumps the thread and encourages plugging up the forum with inanities and name calling. Just back off.
Like I said a few months ago, lots of people on this forum ganged up to get softlaw banned, and then moved on to the next target, Bill. It's like a bunch of schoolyard bullies looking for the weakest kid on the lot.
With all due respect (and I mean that), IMO this is a very interesting perspective you have on this topic. You seem to be painting Bill as a victim, someone who's being picked on by a bunch of on-line bullies. If you see him that way that's fine with me, but I disagree with your point of view.
I see Bill as an instigator. Someone who knowingly disrupts the forum for his own purposes, and as such he's fair game. This is a big sandbox we play in and as such we ALL need to be considerate of everyone else. And that includes Bill.
He's been asked repeatedly to not post repetitive threads and not post his politics and he ignores those requests. I ask you and everyone else here whether in a spirit of cooperation, is it too much to expect Bill to be considerate of everyone else here? It's not like he's offending one person. I can't count on my fingers the number of people he's (now intentionally) offended, so as long as he's intentionally offending people why isn't he fair game to those he's offending?
I agree completely that the comments responding to his posts are disrupting the forum, but why would you put the onus on those of us he's offending to make the necessary changes rather than suggest that the problem be nipped in the bud by requiring Bill to stop initiating the problems?
From what I can see, for the past several months Bill has been well behaved. He does continue to post stupid stuff, but stupid is not against the rules. His political ranting has receded to a level that I think is appropriate; for example, on the Ortiz thread he made some nonsense comment about "Nothing to see here. Moveon.org." Sure it's political in one sense, but in reality it actually doesn't say anything at all. The "pun" -- adding ".org" to the end -- was literally without meaning; semantically null. And so innocuous, and just stupid. Again, stupid isn't against the rules.
Bill has earned enmity with his early behavior, but he also has a right to earn his way back. So far, I think he's done OK; not great, but OK.
I know you think he's extraordinarily manipulative and conniving; the Macchiaveli of Boston.com, putting up a simpleton front while secretly trying to stir the pot and flame the forum. But I really do see a guy who wants to have fun and talk baseball, but just doesn't have the basic social competence to do so well.
Ok. I'll respect that. But don't you think he has the same obligation everyone else has here to be cooperative and not intentionally and repeatedly bait anyone?
I mean, he KNOWS that the repeatedly starting threads bashing Papi is going to be incidiary just as his political jabs are - and they happen anyway. And c'mon... of all the things he could have said, what are the chances that his reference to Moveon.com was by accident? It was just another cheap shot.
I don't think he's entitled to a pass just because (if you're right) he doesn't know any better. He's not putting much effort into getting along with everyone else so why should everyone else make an effort to get along with him?
I can live with "Stupid". We all lived with it for years. But now it seems that some people think it's OK for Bill to bait other posters but it's not OK for them to rise to the bait. What kind of a deal is THAT???
