    They could offer him arbitration just like they do with any other player who becomes a free agent.  If he accepts, the two sides either agree on a one year salary or go to arbitration.  If he declines, the Red Sox get two compensation picks if Paps is a Type A free agent  (provided the CBA rules don't change).

    the BRS have not and will not engage in contarct talks with JP after this final year  of paying him $12 mil.  You can bet that Heath Bell from SD Padres will be open with interets, especially if uncertainty is put forth on Bard's role

    You're right on arbitration for Papelbon, Kimmi.  If they don't sign him, the sox get at least one, maybe two, players compensatoin from the team that does sign him.  Probably two.  Not sure I will be sorry to see him go, though I wish him well.  And I will not miss the drama of seeing him pitch in the ninth inning.
