Re: Real Reason Theo Epstein Left: John Lackey Out for 2012 Season

Let me get this straight:

No Lackey for next year.
No Dice K for at least 1/2 the year.
Hopefully no more of Wake (Thanks for all you've done Wake but it is time to leave).
Please, no more of 'Miller Time'.
Definitely no Bedard, too injury prone.
Excellent.

Develop Doubront, Tazawa and Weiland @ 3A as starters just in case.

If Paps leaves, have a competition between Aceves, Jenks and Bard as closer. And keep all 3 in the Pen.
Also I would like to see Atchinson as long man, Morales and Hill (when healthy) as the leftys.
Give Albers another shot, who knows?.

I know there are only 3 starters (4 when Dice is back) but that's solveable.
The BP looks pretty well the same w/out Paps but hopefully they have a stronger year.  Keep in mind they were taxed last year with the starters having such poor starts.

That's it, that's all!
In Response to Re: Real Reason Theo Epstein Left: John Lackey Out for 2012 Season : It's not. It's Theo's fault for signing a guy who stunk both seasons he's been in Boston and who makes ace type money. Healthy Lackey isn't worth that type of money.
Posted by Modano09
It's not?
How did Lackey get on the Red Sox roster pulling down 80 something mil? Blackmail? Did Lackey get pics of Theo and Gammons doing the nasty?

It is Theo's fault for going all in to GET Lackey.
In Response to Re: Real Reason Theo Epstein Left: John Lackey Out for 2012 Season : Sox will get another year for free. Sox will benefit. Forum chronic whiners will suffer next year since they'll have one less player to whine about. No more Drew, Tito, Theo, and Lackey. All of the whining will be focussed on Crawford who will rebound. Bad year coming for the whiners.

They only "win" if insurance will cover a portion of this years deal.  The "free year" at the league minimum is only worth anything if he recovers to his old self, and can still pitch at that "age".

The downside is we now need 2 SP next year.  Wake might end up being one of them, despite what many want.  Aceves/Wake as the 5th and 6th starters could be alot worse...

Hear that?
Its the sound of a reality check.

Theo's parting gift to Sox fans, a Clement sized salary dump named John Lackey.

I think Aceves is too valuable in the Pen, just in case Pap leaves.  Wake on the other hand needs to leave/retire.

Wakefield needs to leave?

No wait, that sounds like what I said when Theo was busy running Damon out of town.

Also, does anybody think that the Sox should let Bowden go to another organization (NL or AL West) to give him a shot @ a half decent career?

Like H@ll I was.
I said BOTH moves were a mistake LONG before they went down. Lackey wasn't even the THIRD best pitcher available and Theo got him.  And where did Theo get Crawford from? The injured list. If you're getting anyone from Tampa it had to be Upton. What was Theo's problem? Does he think they all look alike?

Posted by OurMan
ummm yeah maybe...except the topic of the thead includes "Jon Lackey out for 2012" being the reason Theo left....so my main point was in reference to the topic at hand.

And your analogy is a very crude one, Varitek winning the triple crown is obviously not going to happen...however pitchers always (the ones who rehab and return) come back to the big leagues with a little extra zip on their fastballs after TJ surgery.

You take him seriously and literally also ( Varitek winning the triple crown). Don't believe anything that trolls say since they do not come here to be credible, they come here to annoy and laugh at all who fall for their routine.

I love the "we could have had Roy Halladay and therefore we would be in the World Series" crud. It's like the fiction he has created in his mind is more vivid than the reality the rest of us actually live in.

Yeah because having the 2010 Cy Young winner on the Sox staff instead of say, Wakefield wouldn't have made a difference.

Can't fix Theo Chick.

There's just as much of a chance (NONE) that Wakefield is worth a roster spot in 2012 as there is Varitek winning the triple crown in the AL next season.

Extra zip on Wakefield's fastball?
Great, so it will be a 29mph dud then?

ummm you do realize I was never talking about Tim Wakefield...and I never brought up Varitek, who was completely irrelevant to the conversation.

My point, and my only point was pitchers often recover stronger from TJ surgery...and Lackey very well could come back stronger in 2013.  That was it, nothinng more or less.

Re: Real Reason Theo Epstein Left: John Lackey Out for 2012 Season

Why does everyone assume that Lackey is such a detriment to this team, that he a cancer and the reason we didn't make the PS? Perhaps it was because of his elbow that he pitched poorly down the stretch. Yes, he is conceited, but a fierce competitor, mmuch like Youkilis.
How do we know it wasn't Beckett that was the bad influence? It has been stated that he brought some of his lackidasical ways with him from FL.
It's really all about the money, isn't it? If we had paid less than $10M/yr for him, there would not be such contempt. But because the RS offered him nearly $16M, he's the bad guy.
Drew was and is, the highest paid position player on the team, and really did nothing to earn even half that. Yet, most of the homers here defended him as the best RF, never to win a GG, in the game!
