If the Rangers pitching continues like that, and if their hitting goes in a slump ... well playing Texas in the PS may not be be so bad (if they make the playoffs).

TB's starters have really stepped it up through the "dog days" of the season. Good thing their bats haven't heated up.
I question why they didn't call up Jennings earlier. The kid looks like the "real deal". They also have a kid named Moore in the minors that everyone is drooling over.
Too bad TB's talent is wasted on a city that barely knows they exist.

You mean softy was wrong? TB is not a hitter's park? Golly Gee!
TB pitchers still do good on the road. They win more and still have a 4.00 ERA (3.23 at home in 2011)
Their WHIP are close (1.18 at home/1.27 away- both very respectable.)
Last year, the differential about the same (H 3.42/ A 4.17)
This year their hitting home-away differential is much worse than last year. Last year their home OPS was just .020 lower, this year it is .055 lower.
You know, softy never answered back on that Lugo position of his that I exposed. He had said that fan and media expectations for Lugo's offense were inflated because we all were too dumb to factor in that his TB were inflated by the great hitter's park he played in all those years in TB. He said that was the reason we considered him a bust, and that only he knew what to really expect based on his TB hitter's park theory. What a clown!

Recently, TB has been tough on the road as well:Starters and relievers...
5 ER @ Tor
0, 2, 3 @ Bos
9 & 1 @ NYY
That's 21 ERs in the last 7 road games (3.00 ERA).
All in "hitter's parks".

Players (Lugo/Wheeler) who excel in one venue may choke down in another. This is why it's important to weigh one's talent level with his environment, (and I'm not just limiting this to venue dimensions). Ken Hawk Harrelson was lost when he left Boston. He really loved playing here. It's no wonder:
Hawk at Fenway: .318 BA .605 SLG 1.014 OPS
Hawk on the road: .235 BA .437 SLG .743 OPS

The only one I can think of is Beltre, but that's just one year.
He has much better career road splits than home, but it's not surprising considering he did time in LA and Seattle.
This year, he's more prone to the launching pad:
IN TX: .295 BA .623 SLG .973 OPS
away: .259 BA .400 SLG .689 OPS
It's hard to differentiate a player's true talent level with the influence of venue.
Especially one like Fenway. But that's what makes it so interesting.
The Rays have a quality staff in any venue. Pitching is the over-riding factor.
I'd rather the RedSox face NY's pitching, or for that matter, TX/Tigers, than Tampa's...

AGONE was hitting much better at Fenway than on the road until his HR slump after the HR derby. That and his latest hot surge in TX altered his OPS quite a bit.
Youk's numbers are telling.
I think Salty, as is the case with some pitchers, will eventually use Fenway to his advantage and his numbers will definitely be reflective. He has to learn to use the wall.

Regardless of Detroit's numbers, I still hope Sox win the division. To win in the playoffs you have to beat good pitching and your starters have to step it up. I believe if the Sox are playing good ball they can beat anyone. Detroit should be well rested, but may also be in coast mode too long. My only hope is that we avoid the yankees, not because I think we'll lose, but I'm 88, have a lot of venom left for that team, and it just might be enough to send me to Saint Peter (or other places:) )

Bill Buckner was better on the road (ironically) and Trot Nixon slugged a little better on the road in his career. Salty from the left side seems like a similar dead-pull power profile. Depending on what happens with Varitek / Lavarnway / Papi, Salty might see more ABs from the right side in coming years.

Hey, how about Price today: 12 Ks in 6 IP. He's been kind of down this year as Shields has gotten all the press, but this kid Price is buttah.
(Jennings has 2 jacks today: he's over 1.000 OPS in a small sample size. Gotta wonder where TB would be if Jennings was with the big club all year and hitting just 80% of what he's done so far.)

Unfortunately, or fortunately when looking at it from a Sox fans perpectve, like the Rockies they started thier run too late. July was thier undoing they played below .500 while the Sox and Yanks both played .650 plus.
