Red Sox are expected to sign Rafael Devers on Friday

Word around the industry is that the Red Sox will officially sign Dominican 3B Rafael Devers, the No. 3 international prospect, on Friday.

Here's a scouting report for him:

We may see him in 10 years when Bogaerts is ready for FA. We can get excited about most anything Red Sox these days.

With Iggy gone (Boggy at SS not 3B now) and openings at 3B (Cecchini?) and 1B (Middlebrooks?) next year, we may find room for Devers sooner than we think.

By the time Boggy, Cecchini and Middy get their positions figured out, he'll still be "in the wings", but I like how Ben is looking long term.

Here are some past Sox International signings of note....

    1984: Carlos Quintana

    1993: Rafael Betancourt

    1996: Frank Francisco

    1997: Sun-Woo Kim

1998: 11 players- 6 made it (Blanco, Cho, de la Rosa, Ledezma, A Martinez, J Perez)

    2000: Hanley Ramirez

    2001: Anibal Sanchez

2002: 27 players- none made it.

2003: 20 players- 1 made it (Argenis Diaz)

    2004: 32 players- 1 made it (Socolovich)

    2005: Felix Doubront

    2006: Yamaico Navarro

    2007: Dice-K, Okajima, Che-Hsuan Lin, Engel Beltre

    2008: 26 players- o made it (H Meneses)

I agree...Ben has the long term future on his mind as much as the here and now.

It is good to see the Sox are still looking to build the Organization Long term as well as for the here and now, but projecting a 16 year old to the Major league level is a tough haul.....I will put him "in the Wings' when we get to see him play some in the states.

Re: Red Sox are expected to sign Rafael Devers on Friday

Adding qualityathletes and players is always important.  If this guy is ranked #3 he must at least have some nice potential.

He will probably go to the Dominican League to get started and then begin to work his way up the ladder.  How fast he moves from there will depend upon his production and how he matures both physically and emotionally.

Since he is only 16, he will likely take at least 5 years to be even considered ready for Boston, but that is OK as long as they keep signing similar top level athletes behind him

It certainly seems like the Sox are continuing to build an entire system that will revolve around top talent.

Which probably means he is more like 19 or 20 and his real name is not Rafael Devers...or have things changed in DR?
