If the deal is simply hanrahan for pimental and sands it's hard to hate. clearly, bailey is a major question mark, and bard even more so, so going into the season without solid, veteran pitching at the closer and set-up spots would have been a bad idea. if bard and bailey both flame out again they'd still be looking at something like hanrahan, ueahra, tazawa, breslow, morales, miller, and aceves. if thiose guys return to form this could legitimately be one of, if not the, best bullpen(s) in baseball.
of course it would not be a surprise if more changes occurred. could easily see aceves and /or one of the lefties being moved as well, but with bailey, bard, mortensen, de la rossa, melancon, et al, waiting in the wings you've got to figure that this bullpen is likely to be solid and having say one spot open wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. relievers can be a little unpredictable year to year, and obviously injuries always crop up, so it would be nice to see a lot of early competition for these spots. they'll have enough guys with track records and live arms to make this one of the teams' strengths.
still think acquiring another proven starter, an outfielder/1b type, makes sense (if napoli is out they'll obviously need a starting 1b as well), but think the f.o. has to be judged on their overall job going into the season. still not stellar up to this point maybe, but pick-ups like ueahara and hanrahan are seemngly positive steps in the right direction.
