Since I'm looking more at 2014 and beyond, this deal does not impress me, but it's a good trade since I didn't see Sands or Pimental making it anyways. I think we may extend Hanrahan, so then it would be good for 2014 and beyond (unless Ben gives him $39M/3).

Our pen is looking pretty nice as well as deep:

    Hanrahan

    Bailey

    Uehara

    Breslow

    Aceves

    Morales

    Tazawa

    Miller

    Melancon

    Mortensen

    Bard

    Carpenter

Seems reasonable, depending on the other two names. It leaves us a little short on AAA backup at 1B, but we'd have had to clear some roster space anyway.  As long as either he or Bailey can close, we have a monster BP, at least on paper.

It almost seems like someone has to go-

    • Bailey
    • Hanrahan
    • Tazawa
    • Uehara
    • Breslow
    • Miller
    • Morales
    • Melancon

That's what I was thinking. Maybe a couple of bullpen arms, Ells and one of our catchers for some top flight pitching prospects.

Re: red sox close to getting hanrahan?

If the deal is simply hanrahan for pimental and sands it's hard to hate. clearly, bailey is a major question mark, and bard even more so, so going into the season without solid, veteran pitching at the closer and set-up spots would have been a bad idea. if bard and bailey both flame out again they'd still be looking at something like hanrahan, ueahra, tazawa, breslow, morales, miller, and aceves. if thiose guys return to form this could legitimately be one of, if not the, best bullpen(s) in baseball.

of course it would not be a surprise if more changes occurred. could easily see aceves and /or one of the lefties being moved as well, but with bailey, bard, mortensen, de la rossa, melancon, et al, waiting in the wings you've got to figure that this bullpen is likely to be solid and having say one spot open wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. relievers can be a little unpredictable year to year, and obviously injuries always crop up, so it would be nice to see a lot of early competition for these spots. they'll have enough guys with track records and live arms to make this one of the teams' strengths.

still think acquiring another proven starter, an outfielder/1b type, makes sense (if napoli is out they'll obviously need a starting 1b as well), but think the f.o. has to be judged on their overall job going into the season. still not stellar up to this point maybe, but pick-ups like ueahara and hanrahan are seemngly positive steps in the right direction.

Well the bullpen is officially top notch at this point.  It's hard to argue with the arms Cherington has assembled out there.

According to this Sands and Pimentel are the main pieces.  That is nothing to give up.

lol jesus christ, yeah one year of Ellsbury and a C who's only skill is above average power should be plenty for a top 10 player.  Who, by the way is the face of their franchise, recently signed to a fantastic contract and who is 26.  Please think before posting these things, I'm sorry for being mean but McCutchen is an elite player in his prime.

Re: red sox close to getting hanrahan?

defintely some problem areas with hanrahan, he gave up 8 home runs, blew 4 saves, walked too many (36 in 57 innings). war was 1.2. whip 1.27.  but he gets strikeouts, had 36 saves, throws 97, with opponents batting .187 against him and has been generally been very solid for several years now as a closer. considering aceves and bailey (in limited duty) went 3-11 with 11 blown saves between them and an era well over 6 not sure how the f.o. cpouldn't go out and make a move. he will likely make somewhere in the neighborhood of 6.5-7 after arbitration, which is in order. I was all for them going after someone like mike adams (who signed with the phillies at 2 for 12), but hanrahan and ueahara seem like quality solutions.
