Scraping bottom perhaps but what about the Yankees signing Youkilus for $12 mil. for one year. Why don't I read anything about that colassall blunder here. Don't get me wrong ( a favorite concern troll expression) , I loved Youk as a player here for years and will always tip my hat to him but $12 mil. for an aging, crippled, over-the-hill player that was a castoff from the White Sox? Why no talk about Cashman signing Youk? Any response?

Maybe it is not feasible for Lav to play 1st? Otherwise sign Kotchman, get Lav out there in a platoon and see how it goes until mid-June.

So the Sox sent a few scouts to watch a Bobby Abreu workout in Venezuela and now he is a 1st base option?!  Absolutely not...The scouts were sent over to see if he was worth inviting to spring training.  He's a respected veteran, who may have a positive impact and possibly earn a roster spot as a lefty platoon with Gomes...That's all...The Sox want Kalish to play every day in Pawtucket...If the Napoli deal falls through, (unlikely from what I hear), then the Sox will obviously look elsewhere.

Hey here is an idea.....why not Papi at first?   OK,  I laughed while I was typing.  I honestly think that the language gets taken care of and Napoli is all set.  I don't think Abreu is a true option but the RS need to kick as many tires as possible.

No, every criticism against your team / GM needs to be compared against the norm or average. In natural science, it is called the null hypothesis. Ben has not signed Abreu and Cashman has signed Youk. Get it? Please try to keep up, be logical, reasonable.

    [/QUOTE]

Youk and Abreu aren't comparable. One is going to start at 3rd for the Yanks, a position he play compared to someone who is out of baseball and would be a bench player playing out of position. Try to keep up and be logical.

I would say Berkman is the second best option after Napoli and has bigger health concerns.

Actually, Abreu's days of "hitting" in MLB are over. He's still good at taking pitches and fouling pitches off. I don't think that's enough to merit an active roster spot for a fat old man.

I am not sure what the Red Sox scouts saw in Abreu in Venezuela.  But Abreu should not even be considered an option.

Cherington: "Bobby, we want you to play 1B."

Bobby: "But I never played 1B."

Cherington: "It's easy Bobby,....tell him John."

    Farrell: "It's extremely difficult."

Bobby Abreu - OF - Dodgers

According to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox observed Bobby Abreu's workout in Venezuela as "background work" and "nothing more than a scouting assignment."

Alex Speier of WEEI.com was first to report news of the Red Sox attending the workout. Lauber speculates that Abreu could make sense as a left-handed-hitting outfielder to split time in left field with Jonny Gomes, but it appears unlikely the Red Sox will sign him.

Re: Red Sox Interested in Bobby Abreu for First Base

Bobby Abreu no thanx. It seems the Sox are looking for a back up plan, if the Napoli deal is rejected. This is not the answer.

The sox are better off with Berkman( 1 year with 2nd year option) and signing Grady Sizemore to minor league deal and see if Grady can is recovered during spring training.

Berkman Gomez and Papi for 1B

Papi Berkman and Gomez for DH'ing

If the sox have too Berkman can be a depth OF'er. only if necessary.
