The trick -- as we've seen with Middlebrooks -- is making all of that potential and all of those skills work at the major-league level.

Could Cecchini be better than Middlebrooks? Sure. Could Brentz be better than Gomes? No question. Could Webster be better than Doubront? Absolutely.

Cecchini is in Single-A. He's never seen an elite breaking ball in his life.

He's got a long way to go to be the player Middlebrooks is now, let alone to surpass him.

Building for the long term is great, but if you have a team you think can get to the playoffs and make a run this year, you have to respect what your current team is doing.

That said, I don't see any scenario in which the Red Sox part with Bogaerts, Barnes, Cecchini, Ranaudo, Owens, Swihart or Vazquez unless they're getting Giancarlo Stanton.

Last year it seemed like they waited till late in the season to move up guys like Bogaerts and Brentz, but could it happen earlier this season because of pure dominance (Cechinni) and possible needs(Almanzar)?

It's all individual. Matt Barnes was promoted in late May because it was clear he was too good for Greenville.

Bogaerts was promoted the first week of August, Brentz went to Triple-A at the end of August.

Cecchini's probably the guy pushing most for a promotion right now, while Bogaerts is likely to find his way to Pawtucket before celebrating his one-year anniversary with the Sea Dogs.
