"He's a big-leaguer. His goal is to play in the big leagues, and he's very driven and very focused," DiSarcina said. "You can see it between innings, you can see it preparing before the game.... He's another one you love having him around, but sooner or later he's going to get plucked to go up there and help out."

    Jose Iglesias.

1.Great defender — as good as any in the league. There’s legitimate value in that independent of how he hits.
    2. Iglesias’ future with the organization depends not only on how he develops as a hitter, but also on how Bogaerts develops as a fielder. If Bogaerts can handle SS, then he’s going to play SS and Iglesias is the odd man out. If Bogaerts can’t handle it, then Iglesias has a window until Deven Marrero shows up. (The Red Sox can then decide where Bogaerts is best suited to play in the organization, if that’s third or a corner outfield spot.)

    Jackie Bradley Jr.

The more ready Bradley is, the less likely Ellsbury signs a long-term deal. Why pay B.J. Upton or Carl Crawford money for Ellsbury when you can pay the league minimum to Bradley for the next three years?

Now, is Bradley ready to play center field for the Red Sox right now? No. He seems susceptible to hard fastballs inside. That's an adjustment he has to make. But he's also got all year to make that adjustment before the Red Sox have to make a decision on Ellsbury.

No one expected Bradley to be in the major leagues on Opening Day, so he's already ahead of where he was supposed to be at this time. He'll be ready. Ellsbury will be in another uniform in 2014.

    Christian Vasquez

Everyone got a chance to see how outstanding his defense can be with the way he played in spring training. If Vazquez is going to be the Red Sox catcher long-term, however, he has to hit, and it's been sort of inconsistent. He had a terrific year two years ago in his second go-round at Single-A Greenville, and he was OK at High-A Salem last year. If he can hit, with his defensive tools, he absolutely can be a starting catcher by 2015.
