    One option would be Alfredo Aceves, but Aceves threw 105 pitches in six innings for Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday. He wouldn't appear to be a candidate to pitch anytime before Saturday -- and even that would be on three days' rest.

    Another option would be to call up Daniel Bard from Double-A Portland, but Bard has issued four walks and allowed four hits while getting six outs in his last three appearances for the Sea Dogs.

    What appears most likely is that the Red Sox finally will clear space on the 40-man roster for a reliever like Ryan Rowland-Smith or Jose De La Torre, both of whom have had terrific starts to the season at Triple-A Pawtucket.
