Cecchini could definitely make a run at the third-base job by 2015.

    Trading Deadline:

There is probably not any top of the rotation pitchers that Ben can trade for at the trading deadline who are worth giving up some of our talented prospects.

If you're going to give up a package of top prospects, you want a guy like Beckett or Martinez who you have under control for a little while.

One interesting name is Travis Wood, a 26-year-old with a 2.03 ERA through eight starts through the rebuilding Chicago Cubs.

If Theo Epstein could flip Wood for three top prospects -- say, Barnes, Brentz and Cecchini -- maybe he'd do it.

But even Wood would come to the American League with big question marks.

He's throwing a 90-mile-per-hour fastball in the National League Central, and there's no way to know if that would play against the Yankees and Blue Jays in this division.

    Draft

-In the draft you always draft the best player available.

The Red Sox have restocked their system with some pitchers, so I'd be inclined to say that they'd be better off coming away with a top bat.

The best player left on the board at No. 7 should be the one who gets picked.

If the Red Sox need room on the 40 soon, he’s the likeliest candidate to be DFA’d.

Independently, Butler isn't bad to have on the 40, but it’s really hard to carry five catchers on it.

One other thing that’s restricted roster flexibility: adding Jackie Bradley, Jr. to the 40 for Opening Day.

If the Red Sox had gone in a different direction and, say, kept Ryan Sweeney, they could have designated Sweeney when Ortiz came back and had that extra 40-man spot.

Stanton is the one player out there probably worth decimating the farm for -- but even then, is he worth decimating the farm for?
