In his haste he tripped over the dog, broke his eyeglasses, lost his false teeth, and split open his trousers. Needless to say, his post not only bashed Jake but he also blamed him for his falling down.

I've got no view on Ellsbury.
He's had flashes of great baseball, but not worth missing out on the 2008 World Series championship.
Jacoby already had his ring, could have moved on to Minnesota and the Red Sox would have had the ace to carry them through the '08 season and back to the World Series. -

You will find some friendly company there and most on that board have been saying the same thing you just posted for the last four years.

What Sox "deserter" have the fans never turned against? Watch how happy they are to see Paps or Papi if either of them walk and remain in the AL which is a given with Papi. Player appreciation only runs skin deep in Boston and then only when it is consistent with the "What have you done for us lately?" thing. -

I think Nomar got a pretty decent round of applause when he returned to Fenway.
Epstein shouldn't show his face on Landsdowne & Yawkey again. -

OurMan, if you want to blame Theo for 2011 (and 2010), you have to give him some credit for 2004 and 2007.
I think he and the rest of the Sox management, including the owner, were just what the doctor ordered. Yes, he made some bad moves, but he made a bunch of good ones too. Thus the new owner of the Cubs is paying him a huge some of money to right their ship.
As for September 2011, the pitching went south and dragged the rest of the team along. But for the other five months of 2011, the Sox played pretty good ball and were headed for 100 wins and the AL East. In other words, Theo had put together a pretty good team for 2011 even though Lackey was horrible and Crawford wasn't worth the $15M he was paid (just like Drew wasn't worth the $14M).
The heart of the Sox order this year--Ellsbury, Pedroia, AGon, Youk, and Ortiz--are all here because of deals by Theo or the farm system Theo helped develop (plenty of others were involved as well).
I will admit that September 2011, Lackey, and Crawford make it easier to watch Epstein move to Chicago, but I also think the evidence strongly suggests that, the Sox boobirds notwithstanding, Theo Epstein just got a merit promotion. -

NO I don't.
That's the problem! The lovable losers (Chicago Cubs) just bought a bill of goods. As events still unfold here in Boston, we see that Lucchino called the shots for BOTH World Series title teams, with Cherington (a Duquette holdover) doing the heavy lifting.
Theo fought for more control over the Sox, quitting in 2005 in the gorilla suit debacle. Why? Because Theo wanted more control over the Red Sox roster as GM. We just saw the fruits of that move over the last 3 seasons. As FiveKatz said on the other forum, the more control Theo got, the worse the Sox got.
Epstein is the most overrated GM in the history of sports and the least qualified.
Too bad the Cubs are about to learn what millions of Red Sox fans already knew. -
