Part of the reason why we get into these situations is that our starters very rarely pitch a complete game. The occasional complete game is important in that the entire pen gets a rest. Even eight innings from the starter would help. And , it is not true that the complete game is a thing of the past. Check the daily box scores. Complete games are being thrown , just not by our guys.

    Stabbed by Foulke.

14 teams, including Tampa Bay have no complete games.

    The Reds have 1.

The Red Sox have 2 complete games. So do 9 other teams

    KC and Washington have 3

Philly and the Dodgers have 4

    St Louis has 5.

I don't think I'd trade records with any of those teams, besides the Cards.

You miss the point. It is not about trading records with another team. It is about the bullpen being depleted, as we are currently seeing.  A complete game , or even eight innings , would help relieve that situation. I recall Lester having a CG a while back. Have not seen one in a while. Are we counting Clay's rain - shortened win in NY ?   Do you really dispute the idea that starters going deeper in games would be a big boost to the pen?

    In response to ADG's comment:

Here is what I would have done without having to risk losing anyone via DFA and secondly not needing a starter for Thursday:

    1. First of all, Breslow only threw 1/3 of a inning, and Miller 2/3. Assuming Mortensen is okay, those three guys would be available tonight.

    2. Bring up Aceves and put Buccholz on the DL. He'll miss an extra start, but given the neck issue, give him the extra rest.

    3. Push Lester to tomorrow in Morales start. This gives Lester an extra day of rest and puts the other starters back on normal rest. Dempster goes Thursday, Doubront Friday, Lackey Saturday.

    4. Pitch Aceves tonight. He's got a rubber arm and hopefully he can give you 6 innings. He will probably give you more innings that Lester.

This allows you to keep your entire bullpen intact, have Breslow, Miller and Mortensen tonight, and only need one additional starter.

Don't overlook Morales, is there any reason he can't go an inning or two in a relief role tonight, as he only pitched 2 innings last night.

    I agree. I'd love 7 or 8 more often.

My point was asking for more complete games, in this day and age, is unrealistic.

Thank god  u are no where near the team.

And again, Conan adding NOTHING but fluff.  Do you find it hard to add anything of substance?

So you think there's a better chance that Alfredo Aceves, who would have had to fly to Tampa on the same day he was scheduled to pitch, will give you more innings than Jon Lester on a night they will have a skeleton bullpen?!

    [/QUOTE]

Hey jasko - Absolutely. Jon Lester is terrible.

well now! Ben and John did the logical thing and called up Fredo to pitch tonight. My prediction is that he does the job and rights the ship.

    GO FREDO!

    GO SOX!
