    Red Sox recall Okajima

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

The Red Sox have recalled lefthanded reliever Hideki Okajima from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned Felix Doubront down.

Okajima appeared in five games for the PawSox. His line: 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. He last pitched on Saturday and should be good to go today if needed.

The return of Okajima gives the Red Sox a true lefty reliever and one-batter specialist type than they had in Doubront, a starter who was wedged into the role when the Sox dropped Dennys Reyes earlier this month.

Meanwhile Rich Hill, who has not given up much of anything from the start of spring training until now (17.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 5 BB, 17 K), waits for his chance. With Okajima having options, the Sox can move him back and forth. Hill is out of options, so if he comes up he has to stay or be passed through waivers.

This just may be what Dice-K needs--A fellow Japanese buddy to give him a shoulder to cry on.  lol

That's the reason Oki was originally brought over......

Was Doubront returned to Pawtucket?  I hope so.  He needs to develop as a starter, and Oki can do as well as Doubront has been doing, IMO.  However, I think Hill deserves a shot...maybe two lefties in the pen?

I agree but oki isn't the pitcher he was when the sox signed him. that 87 MPH fastball isn't fooling many ML hitters. With the way fancona handles the pitching staff I am not sure this was a good move.

They should have kept Doubrant, activated, and DFA'd or DL'd Wakefield. Oh well, when Oki struggles most Red Sox fans who love Wakefield will have two Asians to overtly hate.

oki still has minor leagye options as does dubront. rich hill is opt of them, once he comes up he cant be directly sent back regardless of how much he stinks. oki will just be a leftie specialist! can get by with sub-par velocity long as his curve or that slurve he throes is working

Two LH in the pen? What a novel concept! But who do you jettison, Wakefield, Wheeler, Jenks? The Sox could carry 13 pitchers I suppose, but then they'd have to release a PP. Cameron is the logical choice, given his age.

But Cameron is a righty.  I was trying to imagine a lineup that would be effective against a lefty pitcher - certainly as effective as our everyday lineup against righties - and I was having a hard time of it.  Cameron is part of the plan against lefty pitchers, at least for this year, and unless D-Mac catches fire at the plate, I can't imagine the team without him.

see? now I don't look at it that way. I think that bringing Oki back gives DiceK a fellow countryman to laugh with and give positive support to.

Ironically, they have never fostered any kind of relationship while with the Sox.

See, that's downright strange, don't you think?

I'm interested to see what the candyman has after being demoted. Can't hurt too much to see what he has?

Commy, I never mentioned Rich Hill.

Space, how on earth do you know what their relationship is, or how it hasn't changed?

This entire Board was allowed to falsely claim that Crawford didn't like hitting leadoff, to the point of Crawford saying "they don't know me well". They don't know him at all, but it didn't stop them from claiming they knew what Crawford didn't like.

It was pretty well documented over the years.  I grant you that I don't know if it has somehow changed over this off-season or something.

Oki got a nice strikeout but Matsui got a rare extra base hit off of him. The A's fouled off some good pitches. As poor an outing as Oki had, he wasn't the launching pad that Wakefeild is. Bottom line is that Oki going back down should have no bearing on getting rid of Wakefield.

Peter Abraham had a great quote about Oki after he blew open the game last night:

Meet the New Oki, same as the Old Oki.

    Bring up Rich Hill.
