Red Sox Sign Francisco Cordero to Minor League Deal

Red Sox Sign Francisco Cordero By Zach Links [February 16, 2014 at 11:08am CST]

The Red Sox have signed Francisco Cordero to a minor league deal, according to John Tomase of the Boston Herald (on Twitter). The former closer last appeared in the majors in 2012 with the Astros. Cordero underwent surgery to his non-throwing shoulder early in 2013 and was said to be targeting 2014 for his big league return. The 38-year-old posted a 7.55 ERA, 7.1 K/9, 4.1 BB/9, 2.06 HR/9, and 39.6% groundball rate in 39 1/3 innings for the Blue Jays and Astros in 2012. He lost the Jays' closer job in May of that year, was traded to Houston in July, and was released by the Astros in September after hitting the DL with a toe injury. Cordero owns a 3.38 ERA, 8.7 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 over the course of 824 2/3 career innings.

I like signings like this, probably going for his last hurrah, nothing to lose. Might teach a thing or 2 to the Minor Leaguers.

This is very true.   It's like people forget that there is a whole list of minor league teams rosters to be filled.

Simply pointing out the obvious fellas. It's a move the Kansas City Royals or other small market club should make-not the defending champion Boston Red Sox. And Will's not even a southpaw like Bruce is! No risk/ no reward waste of time and effort. Bleh!

NO it's not.  Big market teams make moves like this all the time, they do afterall have triple A teams as well.

What do you expect? 15/million a year superstars signing milb contracts.

so let me point out the not so obvious but truth, that teams have minor league rosters to fill out as well.

CT I can assure you that nobody wants to add a 37 yr old washed up right handed reliever to anyones minor league rostor. The tryout is for the big club , with the minor league system utilized merely for logistics, and I say it's a silly waste of time.

You obviously don't understand how teams work and operate, but it's ok....just be prepared to be annoyed by these types of moves every year because they happen EVERY YEAR, and by BIG MARKET teams as well.

They do it because their G.M.'s are smart and know what they are doing.  Who would you rather have in AAA to fill out a roster spot, a journey man who has ZERO chance of ever contributing???? or a guy who has a big time resume as a closer in the bigs.

If he regains what he once had and a few guys go down, it's a brilliant move.  If not....it cost the Sox effectively nothing.

These are the exact kind of moves that very smart intelligent G.M's make.

Re: Red Sox Sign Francisco Cordero to Minor League Deal

Ben has more than taken care of the major league bullpen this winter...I would guess that Uehara/Mujica/Tazawa/Miller/Breslow/Badenhop is about as solid a group as you're going to find anywhere. In addition, between prospects and various veterans on minor league deals, he and Farrell will have numerous options for reinforcing the major league roster when injuries inevitably come up. (I would guess that he is not done, either...a MiLB deal to someone like Bailey who will be ready to make a return later in the season would make all the sense in the world.)

So it's not like this guy is being signed with the expectation that he needs to slide into the major league bullpen and play a big role. If he has something left in the tank, then great. If not (which is more likely), it will have cost the team nothing to give him a look. There is literally nothing not to like about signings like this.

Yes 38 years old, and Bruce Hurst is 55.   38 year olds can still pitch in the big leagues, I can't remember the last time a 55 year old pitched.

I was going to say the same thing. Everytime someone gets signed to a minor league deal there is always one total doofus on here that complains about it. Ever hear the term low risk high reward?

I have absolutely no porblem with this signing or other signings just like it.  If the guy can help in any way, the move is great.  If he flops completely, he goes home and the Sox are out a few dollars.

In fact, I would love to see about 8-10 of such signings every winter with the thinking that if two of the ten could help in some way all ten would be worth signing.

It's a garbage move. No different than Jose Contreras last year. He might take innings away from someone a lot younger with more promise.
