    Red Sox signed Carlos Silva

I do not know about the complete contract.  Report from mlbtraderumors.com and it seems done deal.
Will he have impact? Will he even reach majors in 2012?
    Your thoughts?

He didn't see time in majors in 2011 season.  I think he spent times in Yankees' minors somewhere but Im' not 100% sure.  Silva has 9 yrs of professional experience on his resume, 2 with Phillies, 4 with Twins, 2 with Mariners, and 1 with Cubs.  70 wins and losses, career ERA of 4.68, his best yr in his career is 2005 with Twins, started all of his 27 games and threw 188 innings winning 9 and losing 8 games.  His ERA was 3.44

Re: Red Sox signed Carlos Silva

Minor league contract to compete for a major league roster spot. Cost will be bottom tier. This is the best value signing of the year, so far. Silva is up and down but had a decent WHIP and ERA in 2011. It was in the NL, but at 32, Silva has had decent AL years in the past. This is the antithesis of Tim Wastefield. The potential for a marginal bottom tier starter is there, but with no requirement to provide a lazy boy 24 man roster by gifting a spot to 45 year old Wastefield.

He was released by the Yankees last July after sustaining a shoulder injury after 7 starts in AAA.  He's a control freak, and could be a great pick up for the Sox if he stays healthy.  He'll make a prorated $1M salary.

Another reclamation signing. Maybe Clement is available as well?

Didn't the Yankees release Aceves, let's hope this signing works out. Low risk, high up-side, kind of pick-up that could pay dividends down the road.

Ike, you are consistent...you really should re-name yourself Mr. Negative.

Now I don't think Silva's signing is anythiing but for depth, and if healthy who knows what the guy can bring...but to throw sarcasm around for everthing the Sox do, or don't do, gets pretty old after a while!

Plus, why does a Dodger fan really care about every move the Sox make, unless you truly trying to incite comments like this one back at you.

If that's your only intent then I understand and will let you drag others into the mud going forward.

They did, although there's a difference between a baseball related injury (Silva) and a non-baseball related injury (Aceves' biking accident).  If he stays ealthy he could be a very good pickup as a #5 guy.  He posted a 2.75 ERA in the minors last year for NYY (3.52 in AAA).  Of course, that was only in 36 innings due to health issues.

He had good seasons in 2005, 2007 and 2010. It's a good gamble. We should look for a few more like him...maybe Brandon Webb?

He's garbage and was a clubhouse cancer for the Cubs before they released him. He was traded for Milton Bradley. Enough said.

Ike says that he is a Dodger fan and has a dislike for the Red Sox. He is having fun toying with all of you. At least he isn't pretending to be a Red Sox fan like many others do. Laugh at him and go along with the give-and-go. It's a game. He also has said that he despises the Yankees but their forums are boring which is the excuse of Pinstripezac and NHSteven. These types are vital to Burrito  who comes here to watch the gullible fall for the various acts.

That speaks more towards his performance relative to his contract than anything else.  Nothing wrong with the guy on a minor league deal, with a low MLB salary should he be called up or make the team.

Seems reasonable.  Our biggest weakness was our inability to supply decent starts from our #7 SP.

The more I read about this guy the more I like him. Here is a guy who couldmgivemus 190 innings + if healthy with great control. In 2005 he walked 9 guys in 188 innings.......that is just unbelievable

Perhaps Mr. Nevathink?  Or in Scottish, Mr. Cannaethink?

Matt (all star) Clement was far from a disasterous signing.  Great? No.  But hardly a poster child for inept Sox management.

There is no reason not to sign Brandon Webb, he unfortuneately got hurt 2 years in a row. IMO give him a Minor League deal and if he's healthy, there's no way he wouldn't be able to help.

I like this signing.  Cheap, if he pitches well he could either start nad move Aceves back to the bullpen or maybe fill Acves roll last year.

Re: Red Sox signed Carlos Silva

I like the idea of signing Webb to a split minor's contract and invite to spring training.  If Webb passes physical, that's a huge start for a guy who suffered from injuries two straight years.  He wouldn't cost much as both money and contract year wise.  Who knows he might turn out to be another Aceves.  If Webb can stay healthy, he can easily be our #2-3 starter.. If he stays health.

one year major & minor split contract for $2MM + $1MM incentives if he throws more than 120 innings in the major + ST invitation.

As long as you keep the buffet table away every fifth day he should be ok. Remember El Guapo?  He has always battled weight. Couple of years ago he was the hottest pitcher in the NL for few months. He is listed at 280.

    Why not.
