Red Sox Talking To Adam LaRoche

The Red Sox are talking with free agent Adam LaRoche, two sources tell Jen Royle of SB Nation Boston (via Twitter).  LaRoche is seeking a three-year deal and a third source tells Royle that he's still not willing to compromise on contract length.

LaRoche would be the alternative to signing Mike Napoli, but major league sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that Boston would prefer to complete their deal with the backstop.  The Red Sox haven't given any official word on why the deal with Napoli hasn't been completed, but sources say that an issue with one of Napoli's hips has given the club pause.  There's an agreement in place for a three-year, $39MM deal, but the Red Sox could simply walk from it since it has not been finalized.

If the Red Sox did sign LaRoche, Rosenthal writes that Napoli would go back into the market and likely accept a shorter, cheaper deal, possibly from the Rangers.  The Nationals would fill the void internally by moving Michael Morse to first base and go with an outfield of Bryce Harper in left, Denard Span in center, and Jayson Werth in right.  However, Napoli remains Boston's preference in part because signing LaRoche would cost a second-round pick.

The Napoli problem is familiar territory for Boston as they put language in the contracts of right fielder J.D. Drew and right-hander John Lackey to protect from pre-existing medical conditions.  According to sources, the Red Sox are working to get Napoli to agree to similar protection in his deal.

    Glad Softbrain isn't the GM.

Laroche gives a solid glove at 1B, and serious power.

In his short time here, he showed he could take advantage of the wall. Other than being right handed, I see zero advantage to signing Napoli over Laroche.

So they lose a second round draft choice? Ben thinks he can hold onto everything, and still get what he wants. Ridiculous. Not every draft choice will be a star, let alone and MLB player.

Offer the 3rd rate LaRoche a one year and 5M contract, which is quite expensive for someone of his profile. Offer Napoli a take it or leave it one year deal at 15M with an option for year two and buyout of 1M, which is a big risk.

Cherry has been caught with his pants down. He should have already signed Loney for 2M to make sure he had a backup plan in place until the trade market improved.

This doesn't make sense.  Why offer the guy anything if you are going to offer 20% of the minimum that he'll get?  That's like driving driving 40 miles to visit a house for sale, and then offering them $60,000 for a $300,000 house.  Negotiating for the best deal is one thing, making an offer that is certain to be mocked is a waste of time and money.

LOL, there is no way LaRoche would sign for 5M a year.  Im glad Ben didnt resign Loney, if you think LaRoche is 3rd rate then Loney would be like 9th rate.

LaRoche isnt going to take a discount to join the Red Sox.  Right now he is already giving the Nats a hard time on signing a new contract.  Sounded alike that LaRoche is begging for Nats to give him a contract like Napoli's.

I just think Ben is just looking for a back up plan at the same time he is probably just trying to wake up Napoli when he hear that Boston is talking to LaRoche.  Napoli isnt going to try to void this contract talk with Boston and then walk away cuz he know that he will not be able to find 3yrs/39mm contract at anyway or nor to find a 13 millions dollars contract at anywhere.  Napoli may have to just accept whatever Boston asked him to put a medical clause in the contract.

Exactly. Just ben doing his due diligance. He's obviously not happy with the in house first base options so if napoli falls through he wants to have someone else ready to take napoli's place.

Man, what are you smoking? 3rd rate LaRoche? $5M? You think Naploi is better than LaRoche?

Mauro G is the back up which is better than Loney.

Re: red sox talking to laroche....

thought laroche was a better choice than napoli from the outset. obviously at this point the key to the sox is length of contract, and also the loss of draft picks. at this point, with napoli slipping away, they need another option so they might be willing to lose the second rounder. 2 @ 24 would make sense for laroche, though they'd probably go as high as 2 @28. and they might even go to their now standby 3 @39. whether they sign laroche, the napoli situation gets worked out, or they move on to plan C or D or E (or whatever it will be), this would likely be followed by another pick-up of a 1B/OF.

Lol. You got me there, but this same kinda thing happened with J.D Drew and he ended up playing all 5 years of his deal here without huge time missed due to the injurie that they where concerned about.

The question is, with this medical thing with the Sox hanging over his head, would any other teams speak to him?

There's just no way the Sox drag this Napoli deal out this long unless there's something SERIOUSLY concerning about that hip. I say move along to Laroche and be happy about it. I think Laroche is a solid bat+glove, and would fit in with what we're trying to do. Hip's are just too risky for my blood.
