From ESPNBoston.com:
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A resolution of the Theo Epstein compensation issue was imminent Tuesday morning, a major league source said, with the Red Sox receiving what was termed a quality minor leaguer back from the Chicago Cubs as compensation for Epstein's hire by the Cubs as club president.
"We are close to resolving this," the source said Tuesday.
The Red Sox and Cubs have been locked in a disagreement for months regarding the terms of compensation for Epstein, who left the Red Sox shortly after the end of last season to become president for baseball operations. The Red Sox initially asked for some of the best players on the Cubs' major league roster, including pitcher Matt Garza, but were rejected by the Cubs, with Epstein in the odd position of trying to set his own value to the Red Sox.
The matter eventually was referred to commissioner Bud Selig, who according to other major league sources had hoped that the teams would be able to strike a deal themselves. Both the Cubs and Red Sox presented written arguments to Selig last week, and have been in contact with the commissioner since.
The prospect from the Cubs is not expected to be on a par with such top prospects as outfielder Brett Jackson or infielder Josh Vitters, the source said, but is expected to be a legitimate big-league prospect.

From MLBTraderumors.com:
9:15am: The Red Sox will receive a pitcher from the Cubs' 40-man roster, tweets WEEI's Alex Speier. That'd rule out McNutt. Rafael Dolis, Chris Carpenter, Jeff Beliveau, and Casey Weathers are on the Cubs' 40-man and cracked Baseball America's top 30 prospects for the team.

An update on mlbtraderumors today had it as
Rafael Dolis, Chris Carpenter, Jeff Beliveau, or Casey Weathers . All minor league pitchers from their 40 man roster. Really underwhelming to me. I was hoping and thinking we were going to get more.

Alex Speier of WEEI tweets that it'll be a pitcher from the Cubs' 40-man roster:
https://twitter.com/#!/alexspeier/statuses/171976193762009089Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors says that probably means
Rafael Dolis,
Chris Carpenter,
Jeff Beliveau or
Casey Weathers. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/02/epstein-compensation-deal-is-close.htmlBeliveau is a promising lefthander while the other three have control issues.

This is like not even a rule 5 pick. It's ridiculous if it ends this way.

The Chris Carpenter like can't be right. Anyway, none of these guys are worth squat. It's as if we got a rule 5 pick.

Well... this update doesn't say minor leaguer in 40-man roster. Does this mean it could be major league pitcher?

In my eyes, this was bound to be how this thing played out. Expectations were way too high on the return; perhaps raised unnaturally by the sox throwing out Garza as their first bargaining position. But there really has been no precedent on getting some sort of high value player as compensatiobn for a front office operative. Theo's rock star status created a sense that his move to Chicago was like a star player or something. But, it was not sound to expect a major leaguer for letting him out of Boston.

I'll take Carpenter or Dolis, and I'm a little surprised that you guys expected more.

The blame for this all falls on upper Sox management. Before letting Theo go a proper compensation deal should have been worked out. Of course if it hadn't it's possible Theo might not have left and the front office would have been very uncomfortable for Theo being a lame duck for the remains of his contract, but I firmly believe if the Cubs wanted Theo badly enough they would have met the Red Sox compensation demands at the time.
At this point this is an old tired story that hopefully will be buried very soon.
Here's hoping for a great 2012 season.
Hetchinspete.

I have a question. Do Sox take on the compensation player's salary as well?

From MLBTraderumors.com:
By Tim Dierkes [February 21 at 10:37am CST]
The Red Sox received righty Chris Carpenter and a player to be named later from the Cubs as compensation for Theo Epstein, tweets Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. The Red Sox placed Bobby Jenks on the 60-day DL to create a 40-man roster spot. Epstein said in a statement:
"I am relieved that this process is over and particularly pleased that the teams were able to reach agreement on their own without intervention from MLB. I truly hope and believe that this resolution will benefit both clubs, as well as Chris, who is an extremely talented reliever joining a great organization at a time when there's some opportunity in the major league bullpen. More than anything, I'm excited that we can all move forward and focus exclusively on getting ready for the season. I wish Chris and the Red Sox nothing but the best in 2012 and beyond."

Guy has thrown 100. I like him as a potential mideseason addition to the pen.

Not really since he's protected and showed that he can get hitters out in his cup of coffee last year (although the walks are a major concern). He should also have options left and doesn't take up a 25 man roster spot for the entire year like a rule V pick would.

Will be interesting to see what the player to be named later is that is coming over from the Cubs and who will be going over from the Sox...I am thinking it will be a nice prospect coming to the Sox in exchange for a mid-level prospect going to the Cubs

Hysterical! John Henry should have paid money to get rid of the incompetent InEsptein, an entertainment minion. To get a player capable of playing marginal level MLB performance, this is a fairy tale ending to 3 years and a half a billion spent for zero playoff wins.

To compare it with Padres who will receive a "lower-level" minor leaguer for Jed Hoyer taking the GM job with Cubbies...

That is a best case scenario. Yes, the velocity is appealing but a 26 year old who still has a hard time throwing strikes is generally not a good thing.
He adds a little more organizational depth, with some potential upside but expecting him to contribute at the big league level in 2012 is certainly optimistic.
