RedSox Get Medical Director, After Going A Year Without One......

    Abraham, Globe Staff

After going a season without a medical director, the Red Sox named Dr. Laurence Ronan to that post, the announcement coming Thursday night. Ronan was the team's head internist last season.

The Sox also named physical therapist Dan Dyrek as the coordinator of sports medicine service. He had been a consultant.

General manager Ben Cherington said the promotions were part of a restructuring that began a year ago. This was the final step.

"For all intents and purposes, the structure is in place," Cherington said. "Hopefully this will work for a long time."

As the Globe reported last week, head physical therapist Mike Reinold is not returning to that post. Massage therapist Mitsugi Funatsu also will not return.

The other members of the staff remain in their positions. Cherington said there could be one other position added.

The Red Sox had 24 players, 13 of them former All-Stars, go on the disabled list 34 times last season. They had 1,495 games missed because of injuries.

Since 1987, when records were first kept, no team in baseball used the disabled list more

A very sad record to be sure.  We have had a miserable medical staff for the past five seasons and they should have been purged years ago, but Prune Face likes to take things slow and that is one of the reasons the team is currently in the outhouse.  We have become a very poorly run club, from the owner down to the manager.  The medical staff has been a disaster.

Now that BC has taken over he has been transforming things. It does take some time and soon enough it will be running smoothly once again. Just needed to get Theos stench off of everything first.

Someone please explain how the injuries were the fault of the Medical staff?

Jake separated shoulder, Middlebrooks broken hand, Pedroia thumb, three TJ surgeries, Ortiz's Achilles' tendon, Posednik broken foot, etc...

I can see where a pulled muscle may be related to conditioning but most of the RS injuries were not issues related to the medical staff.

It is also absurd to say a player is not performing because you perceive him to be out of shape. If that we're the case Sabathia, Sandoval, Fielder and others should either be injured or lousy players.

It is also lame to blame them when a player returns since every player always gets a second opinion and the team goes upon the experts suggestions. It is also foolish to bring back a player too soon who could suffer further injury.

Until 4 months ago you have never heard me utter these stinging words: this team sucks from top to bottom.

Honestly this is a pathetic organization.
