I confess to an overly emotional attachment to the Tony C. #25 debate. I went to St. Mary's in West Lynn a few years after Tony C.  Hushed reverence, shall we say.  The good Sisters of St. Joseph loved a home run hitter. So, yeah, I am biased and emotional.  Could be wrong, but I still feel that way.

If Bobby V and Tony C knew each other and Bobby V wears the number as  a tribute, I say great.

Worrying who wears #25 should be my biggest problem.   Should have softened my remarks.

    Live and learn.

Re: RedSox Org direspecting Tony Conigliaro!!

There's a long list of former Red Sox players who had great careers with the hometowne nine, who's numbers have never been retired. Luis Tiant's #23 always looks funny on another Sox player, the fact is that no one has eminant domain on a jersey # until the Sox decide to honor them by retiring the number. All those that have had thier jersey number retired are in the Hall of Fame, each of them played most if not all of thier careers in a Sox uniform. Fisk being the lone exception...

Tony C's story while tragic, given the promise that he had as a budding super star and a local kid made good. Never fully recovered that promise after being beaned and as such never fulfilled the lofty expectations many thought possible. In the end it's just a number on a jersey and unlike those that have been enshrined into the hallowed halls of fame and had thier numbers retired #25 is not a number that is not synonomis with Tony C...his legesey is that of what if. Those of us old enough to remeber his playing days are the only ones that see his face whenenver the #25 jersey is dawned by a current player or coach...

Carl Yastremski's #8 will never be worn by another player becasue the Red Sox have retired it to honor his career achievement and as such the #8 is now synonmis with Yaz and as I type I can sitll hear the voice of the public address anouncer at Fenway as yaz wlaked to plate...now batting for the Boston Red Rox...leftfiedler, # 8 Carl Yastremski....Yastremski.

The number 21# worn by Roger Clemens hasn't been issued since he departed. Could that be becasue the Sox plan on retiring it once and if he inducted into the Hall of shame?

    What about #24? (Evans)

    What about #5? (Nomar)

    What about #'s 46 and 38?
I think there should be a public ceremony at Fenway -- before the next game Valentine can be marched out to home plate while being cascaded with taunts of "SHAME!...SHAME!"  and boos -- and then have Tony C's brother Billy, rip the 2 & the 5 right off of Valetine's back.  Throwing of various debris at him on his way back to the dugout would be a nice touch also. ------------------------------------- Curt Schilling Deadbeat Fraud

    Bellhorn,

If you are so upset, direct your outrage at the Red Sox ownership and front office with a write in vote campaign of sorts to get Tony C's number retired properly with his family in attendance at a day in honor of his memory. Otherwise you've got nothing to complain about. I can understand some of what you are getting at, but knowing that over the years many others have worn #25 where was your outrage then. Is it that you are just not a fan of Bobby V and this is your way of showing it.
In a way Tony C gave his life that day... he went through a lot every day thereafter and died much too young. In fact had good fortune prevailed he may have been retiring in 1986 after hitting a game winning Game 7 WS homer.

The "what if the beaning never happened" discussion is always intriguing. I would guess that the Yaz-Reggie Smith-Tony C. OF would have gone down as one of the greats OFs. But even if Reggie Smith still was traded after the 1973 season, what happens in the mid-1970s when Evans, Rice and Lynn came up.

Does Yaz stay at 1B when he goes there in the mid-1970s and Tony C. or Rice to DH. Or does someone get traded?

I've always wondered how Sox history would have been different w/o the beaning. Maybe the Sox win in it all 1967.
In Response to Re: RedSox Org direspecting Tony Conigliaro!! : just for my own curiousity cactus, did you complain about this 'travesty' when lowell and others wore that number; or do you just dislike valentine? sounds like the same BS some people throw at OBAMA.
    Posted by mryazz
Obama?  So you're saying that Bobby V is a socialist, with plans to end the sovereign status of the United States, destroy the capitalist system that sustains the success of employers, re-distribute wealth in a manner which has been proven by history to be not only ineffective but disastrous?

If Bobby V was Obama, he would play all 25 players exactly equally, without regard to ability to win or contribute to ball games. He would bully his Congress (the Sox front office) to sign all players to exactly the same salary, regardless of their value to the team. He would order the top hitters (Gonzalez, Middlebrooks) to bunt over and over until their batting averages fall to the team average.  He would order intentional walks and middle-plate fastballs from the top pitchers in order to bring their ERA's up to the team average. If the team gets above .500 in W/L, he'll replace all the bats with very thin, small Little League bats and have the infielders play without gloves until they get back down to .500.  If they play below .500, that's OK, because at least everyone on the team is equal. Finally, he would embark on a tour of all 29 other major league teams' cities and apologize to all of them for the success of the Red Sox in attendance, revenues, and the two World War, er, um, I mean World Series victories during the 2000s. He would pledge to all other teams to never beat them more than they get beat in any given series.

This whole damn thread should never have been written. Just for once I'd like to see some people check their opinions and see if the actually coincide with reality.

I'm mean seriously 15 have worn it since and he is complaining about Valentine.

People check out your comments before you post other wise you look real dumb.

BTW I have made mistakes but when it comes to the ability to check before I post I always do.
