After I checked the score yesterday, I freaked - for a second or two.

After I checked the score and story lines today, I did it again.  For a minute or two.   I actually threw something {An air punch}.

And King Felix tomorrow - well, today.  Man, things look bad.

...I'm not without feelings, aftter all.

I was not eager to get on line and see all the suicide notes and angry, bitter stones thrown at the Sox.  I do understand the frustration, but ...

But I'll be darned if I'm throwing this team away after a difficult month.

It was APRIL, for Pete's sake.  Four games under .500

My calendar suggests that there is May, June, July, August, and September yet to go.

      BEFORE we enter the playoffs.

Take a BIG breath .... hold it  ... let it out slowly.

Take several, if you need.   Grab a bag ... no - a PAPER bag - and breath slowly into it

       1 month down.

       5 to go.

Check that, 6 to go ....

I feel your pain.  It's mine, too.

    But relax ...

       Kiss your sweetie...

       Pet your cat ...

       Walk your puppie....

Heck, some of you need to go to confession ... good time to catch up....

And if you have no other life beside our beloved Beantowners - make up an alter ego - an opposite of your worst fears.  See if you can bring him or her to life ....

Im still relaxed Yaz. well exept for my one air punch after Dice stunk it up again and right before he threw 2 gems in a row. It is only April, albeit one of their worst April's Ive seen in a while, but Im still optomistic . Im a little worried about Dice-K's elbow and the lack off offense, but like Ive been saying all along...Too much talent on this team to be this bad all season. Ellsbury is starting to shine again in the leadoff spot (right where he should be) and salty has started to hit the ball a bit. May is a new month and I believe we will see the Sox turn it around.

I am with you guys as far as relaxed. But, I can't stand watching our offense look like this. It's really been a struggle just sitting and watching our guys swing at terrible pitches. This is concerning because we normally grind out at bats. Even Pedey and Youk are swinging and missing way too much. Crawford looks as though he has given up. Frustration is mounting and here comes the Angels who you no want to kick our butts. We need a couple shut outs pitched or we may be 6 or 7 games under 500 soon. Lets start the new season today with a grinding victory over the King. Lets kick his butt.

The redsox started like this last yr and with the Rays and Yanks constantly winning the redsox were not able to recover. Can you really relax when you have the Yanks and Rays in your division with a team that sometimes looks like it can't get out of its own way?

That was last year. I agree with the OP that you can't write a team off after just 1 month. The Sox will be just fine. They will not play this bad all season.

I agree with the original post - it is good to relax.

Time to watch the Celtics and Bruins.  Put the Sox way back on the back burner.  Check back in when June rolls around.  This team is too pitiful right now to follow daily and analyze every play.  It will drive you insane.

If they are 22 and 32 - go straight to panic mode.  But even 22- 32 isn't the end of the world.  It is that kind of garbage play that may just get JD Drew out of Boston once and for all.

    Defense.  It is still important.

Is it going to rain today in Boston or something?

Do you think we'll be able to maintain our 11-15 record for one more day?  Please just one more day.  I don't want to get into mid-May and fanstasize about the good ol days in April when we a respectable 11-15 team........

If I'm not mistaken, they were further back in the standings last year at this time. And what happened over the next two months? They went on a hot streak and were almost in first place. Then Pedey broke his foot. And other disasters occured. And even then they still fought and had a chance.

I understand. I feel the frustration. But yes, SinceYaz, let's relax. I'm with you. I'm not writing this team off after one month.

4 games under .500 on May 1st and you're saying it's a delusion?? Okay...you go ahead and believe that. Go cry in your corner and wait for next year.

If you truly believe that you better go find a different sport. I hope you're just trolling, cause that was a pathetic thing to say, especially if you call yourself a fan of not just this team, but any team.

This is supposed to be a funny poke at me, but I'll take it.  I spent several summers at our church camps singing, "Kumbaya, My Lord, Kumbaya.  Kumbaya, My Lord, Kumbaya."

It was first sung as a vespers song, which is the specific invitiation for the comforting SPirit of God to "Come by here."

Thus, your joke, is my comfort.  I still ask the Lord to come by here ... where ever that may be.  I specifically ask Him to bless my donut production each evening as I start that it may somehow be of glory to Christ.  I'm blessed to have the work and I want to do the best I can ... and the only way it can be the best is if He's in it helping.

       Kumbaya, indeed!

Southpaw ... appreciate it.  I didn't say it wasn't tough.  It has been.  But I am with you ... too much talent to blow it.  Early 'yips" should let go ... I think things will thaw and we will get to where we ought to be.

I never ever said we wouldn't have to fight in the ALE.  For any who think I've said otherwise, they have not read my stuff.  You aren't saing that, but others seem to think I'm too polly anna to recognize things....

All I can say is that we heard the same craph last year and we almost caught the WC spot even with all those injuries.  Barring the same medical detour, I'm confident we'll make up ground.

The redsox started like this last yr and with the Rays and Yanks constantly winning the redsox were not able to recover. Can you really relax when you have the Yanks and Rays in your division with a team that sometimes looks like it can't get out of its own way?

They ALMOST recovered .... even with all the injuries!!!  I was darn proud of last year's team.  Tough, grind it out - against all odds.

This year's team is gonna make it back.  It WILL be tough.  Never said it wouldn't be.  What I said was let the season play out instead of giving up so early.

I have no doubt it will make it back.  I know every loss beaers more pain now than when we are playing well ... but I'll tell you what REALLY, REALLY hurts .... when you are up 15 games with less than a month and then lose.

This team is all about the days ahead, not the losses behind.

I'm relax after all only 3 teams who have started the month of april under .500 have gone on to make the playoffs so why stress over the rest of the season. odds are we don't make the playoffs, and if we do while we will be team # 4 so be it...

In Response to Re: Relax. No, I mean it. Relax. : Jim    This is supposed to be a funny poke at me, but I'll take it.  I spent several summers at our church camps singing, "Kumbaya, My Lord, Kumbaya.  Kumbaya, My Lord, Kumbaya."    It was first sung as a vespers song, which is the specific invitiation for the comforting SPirit of God to "Come by here."    Thus, your joke, is my comfort.

Bri, too old to become a cop.

      30 years as a preacher...

but cannot drive any more, so that ended ...

But I can still try to do the best I can.... as the New Testament instructs, do all things unto Christ ...

Not DD's ... a niche bakery and cafe, family owned - from scratch each night ... DD's use to be my favorite but in many places they import their donuts from a regional bakery.

I still enjoy DD when out of town ... but they are our base line competition here.  Small town ... with about 6 bakeries (they come and go ...)

I do have a good time.  The owners trust me to use my own taste and style .... makes it interesting.  And all my customers - well, I guess most - say they are the best in th area.  That doesn't upset me ...  Lo)

And it gives me more reason to thank God!

But careful, Bri ... I'm not realistic in my outlook toward the Red Sox.  I'm just optimistic ....

True dat, Yaz old friend. Plenty of time to right the ship.  Yankees needed until Mid-May in 2009 and they sort of won it going away.

Everytime we hit a bump, lose a few, it will stir the pot of "I told you so" pessimists or realists.

    I choose to smile.

I choose to believe we will come all the way back. Or more properly, make it out of this losing position into the winning place that might even please our realists.

I know that they will always harp on how badly the season started and that we could have won even more ...

11-0 and 9-2 are sure signs of our demise.

Only if you choose to believe so.

Recent evidence and history appear to paint the picture as a tragedy.  Some might say a comedy - of errors.

But history is just that.  It does not command the future.

Ask the '04 Yanquis.  Ask the '10 Bruins.  History bears weight but it does not command the future.

This squad will be where it should be by season's end.

The mistakes made lately for the Sox are not helping RSN stay relaxed Yaz. Im still with you that this team will be there at the end. Some things need to change in order for it to happen. Im still confident that they can and will make the neccessary changes to do that.

    I know, southpaw.

It takes effort.  But that is why we learn those techniques too.  :o)

It's funny(ironic).  We've gottern so used to being able to just bellow "BOO!  THROW THE BUM OUT!"  And the expulsion of air and the expenditure of energy is cathartac - for a moment.  We may even get our testosterone pumping, which opens whole other avenues of why we keep doing it.  Throw in the statement, "That's the way a MAN does it!" and all of a sudden chest thumping and biceps shots add more fuel.

    I'm basically a negative person.

But I've seen how being positive changes the whole equation.  It doesn't paint the picture with the lack of reality.  Instead it gives the picture possibility.  It lifts instead of beats down.

I see the bad scores.  And it hurts ... but then I remember some of the schooling I've gotten here ...

and I can understand why Lackey and Wake were left in to take their lumps.  The bull pen was being protected.  That's smart.  To lose two games in blow outs ... and starters that carry that tainted water ... helps the whole team - the pen in this case - for more opportunity later on.

If Lackey and Wake had both pitched well ... and if we had a few less defensive misques ... the decisions  would have been "smart."  If ...

But in the long run, they still are.  A couple of bad losses is still just two losses. Not a wearing out of the bull pen for weeks to come.

And the season is for weeks and weeks and weeks to come.

I have to exercise the relaxation process myself.  But I choose that over the burning anger of negativity.  I save that for more important things - like the maroons that try to run me over on my bike  :oD

Or when Yahoo's drivers cut me out of a game I'm winning on Literati.

Someday, southpaw, I'll tell you a story that helped change my way of thinking utterly.  How over the top support made little geeks into tug of war champs ... because I screamed at them that they could until they DID!!!

The 2010 Atlanta Braves were 9-14 in April but advanced to the postseason. The 2006 San Diego Padres and 2007 National League champion Colorado Rockies also had losing records in April. I'm sure there are more.

If they are 22 and 32 - go straight to panic mode.  But even 22- 32 isn't the end of the world.  It is that kind of garbage play that may just get JD Drew out of Boston once and for all. Defense.  It is still important. 6 Posts from andrewmitch are hidden Re: Relax. No, I mean it. All I can say is that we heard the same crap h last year and we almost caught the WC spot even with all those injuries.  Barring the same medical detour, I'm confident we'll make up ground. It takes effort.  But that is why we learn those techniques too.  :o) It's funny(ironic). I have to exercise the relaxation process myself.  But I choose that over the burning anger of negativity.  I save that for more important things - like the maroons that try to run me over on my bike  :oD     Or when Yahoo's drivers cut me out of a game I'm winning on Literati.   Someday, southpaw, I'll tell you a story that helped change my way of thinking utterly.  How over the top support made little geeks into tug of war champs ... because I screamed at them that they could until they DID!!!       Welcome to Boston, Mr. Gonzalez! Welcome to Boston, Mr. Crawford!! GO RED SOX! 0-6? Fogedaboudit ...See you in November!!!! Come on are you really going to blame it all on Salty? Vmart wasn't a very good play caller either but we still got it done last year before the injuries. Honestly, if they believe Salty is the problem the pitcher can shake off something if they believe it is a problem or they can have the manager pulling the string behind the scenes. If they really wanted they could have Vtek calling the shot from the dug out and telling Salty what to call. Its three games guys against what is probably the best line up in baseball at the moment. We have Lester who is a slow starter but you can't use that as an excuse. Look at Texiera hes a slow starter he has 3 homers in 3 games and look at Papi who has been a slow starter the last few years he has 2 homers in 3 games. If Lester wants to truely be an ace he needs to start it early. Stop taking spring training lightly and actually play as if it was the regular season. Lackey will come out and do what he does best he will eat innings and win 14-16 games. Clay who has done the best out of all of our pitchers so far, which seeing how bad he still did is pretty sad.... 11 home runs given up in three days? Out of how bad our starting pitching did i was more dissapointed in Bard. 4 earned runs from our best relief pitcher. Overall this series was a disaster and the best way to do good is to put this behind us just erase it from our memory. We are going to be facing a bad team in Cleveland winning this series will hopefully get us hot and shoot us forward into the season. Beckett and DiceK should do good i have faith in Beckett and i dont know why but i have had a gut feeling since early off season that DiceK was going to have his best season. Maybe it wont be his best season compared to wins but if you look at it overall i know hes not going to give up so many hits and scare us the whole time. We saw a glimpse of that last year and i think he should carry it on and have a nice season. 14-6+ season which for a number 5 pitcher is great.
Besides today our offense hasn't really dissapointed me. we looked good. Ellsbury has something to prove i see a good season out of him same with J.D. Drew. Well as i've been saying its only 3 games who cares teams go through skids a lot through the season who cares when it is. As they say better now then later. Now lets end this skid and get back out there on Tuesday and show everybody we really are the team they thought we were!
    RSN4LIFE

God so i guess i was the only one that was happy when they extended becketts contract? Hindsight is 20/20. Beckett came off of a good season where he won 17 games and only lost 6. Two years before that he had a season where he went 20-7 with a 3.27 ERA. Btw did you notice that Beckett hasn't done great two times? Last year and 2006 where he posted a 5.01 era. Oh and then the next year he had his best season. How do you know he can't do that again? I guy gets injured for one season and all of a sudden hes bad? Beckett couldve gotten paid that contract solely on how good hes done in the play offs. Or is your memory not good enough to remember the guy who led us against cleveland. If he wasn't on the team then we probably wouldn't have won. The guy put up 3 ERs in 14 inning. He pitched a great game when we were down in the series. Josh Beckett has been my favorite pitcher and im not just going to watch people criticise him for one lost season. The guys helped us so much through the years and then he gets injured and oh he sucks now right? Wrong give the guy a chance before you go off on him. hes pitched one game went 5 innings and gave up 3 runs big whoop thats not even terrible. Josh beckett had a better first game then Lester did, Buchholz did, and Lackey. So why  are you criticising him and same thing goes for Dice K. are you incapable of letting the player play before you criticise him? I've seen glimpses of what this guy can do and when he hits the strike zone instead of goes around it this guy is really good. So why don't you do what they do? try to pitch every 5 days and workout in between, try to see how good you do and how long your arm can go.  Oh and i hope you know theres more than another two games left this season? Were not going to finish the season 3-6 so your title is terrible

Wow.... now tell me something... You consider Becketts 2009 stats bad? Because i would take those numbers anytime. So wait Beckett shouldn't be getting paid Sabathia money? Can you look at there career numbers and tell me that again? Beckett has had two bad seasons and two mediocre seasons. all his other season have been good. Now considering one bad season was because of injury and the other was right when he got traded to the red sox i don't give those numbers trust. He went from playing in the National League to the american League east. That means that him posting a 5.01 ERA with 16 wins and 11 losses is understandable. While CC who was in the draft one year before Beckett so its understandable that Beckett didn't have a full season till a little bit after him. Becketts first 5 seasons he wasn't even given thirty starts while  CC was which is because he played for cleveland... Not to mention i consider Becketts first five seasons better than CC's. so overall becketts numbers are pretty comparable to CC who is only doing better than him in ERA which is probably because of the 500 innings pitched difference. If Sabathia deserves that kind of money so does Beckett. So next time think before you talk or atleast look up information... Also for Lackey if you look at his numbers you can tell he was never signed as a number 2 for us. with lester and beckett there was no way he was going to be one or two then the rise of buchholz pushed hiim back to four. 2007 might've been his only dominant season where he had a 3.01 ERA and went 19-9. Better numbers than CC had in 2007 and oh wait isnt that when he won the Cy young? CC only had a better whip and 20 ips and 30 strike outs more than Lackey. So besides that season which year did he prove he was going to be a number two? Dont blame him for that contract and dont call it a bust since its only been one season. Hes ticked and hes going to prove that hes worth it.

Heck I came to read 2 post's on a thread and got a whole months worth. Are  the naysayers still around these days? Oh wait, they would point out that Lackey sucks (despite his recently wonderful outings 4 runs last 3 outings) and that Wake is too old (but keeps winning 6-3) and Miller gives up to many walks (but keeps winning 4-1), That we need a right fielder because Drew is done and Reddick is left handed (despite hitting .358 and his .529 AVERAGE against lefties) and lets not forget we have no shortstop, but somehow all those balls hit there seems to be fielded and lets not forget our catching woes, we will never make it through a season with a broken down old man and a kid that has never lived up to his potential and hype. and yes it is true that Lowrie cannot stay healthy and we have no backups for the backups.
I digress, I think its time to relax and just enjoy the season.

You noticed that, too?  Of course, he's not the only one who kissed the season off, but it is heartening to note all of them have been wrong ....

Why?  Because I want to be right?

Nah ... because the pleasure of trusting our team, like Tito trusts his players, has borne terrific results.

And that is still, as Promise noted, with all the other stuff not yet set right!!!

This is a great thred, Yaz.  Andrew stays around clinging to his JD Drew rant and thinks that buys him credibility.  The current complaints are:
Lackey's ERA because that fits the story, not that he has pitched well.
    Salty is still no VMart.
    Clay is still hurt.
Crawford should be hitting .500 since the All Star break...oh and some hits went to left field.  He is being paid too much to go the other way.
    Scutaro has a weak arm.
    Ellsbury makes outs sometimes.
    Agon went 2-24 recently.
    DFA Wakefield.

    Did I miss anything?

I'm not paying close enough attention, Jim.  But I think you have it covered pretty well ....  There is that thing about $170 million dollars and no real lefty in the pen ...

We should all be so bad off.

Like that is more desirable than a team with a true lefty in the pen, with a $30 million dollars budget.  And .... 14 games out of 1st.  :oD

    Thanks, Echo.

It was made easy ... those guys never learn a thing from Mr. Henry, he who made billions by hedging his bets, so to speak.  They were so sure it was over all we had to do was wait for the bad stuff to start clearing out.

I know Harness and Burrito have issues with each other (an old a deep scar, I'm afraid), but Harness is quite affable and interesting when disassociated with his nemesis.  Burrito can be interesting as well.  Not that I agree with him all the time, but that isn't a requirement.

I shall share this pleasure (bold print) with you and others who have enjoyed seeing the Sox surge to the fore, in spite of the pit falls that are common to the game.

Re: Relax Revisited.... Care for a review of the season lost in April?

Let me see if I have this right.  The Sox lose 6 straight to start the season, then go to 2-10 while the Yankees are winning games right and left.  And it was at that exact point that true Sox fans were supposed to be saying, "not a problem.  The Sox are right where they need to be.  In just three months they will be a shoo-in for a play-off slot."  Crawford not hitting?  Not a problem.  Ortiz off to a slow start?  Only to be expected.  Lackey and Matsuzaka looking less than stellar?  Things could not be better.

While I will agree that April is way too early to give up, I am stunned that we now have a thread about how all true Sox fans should have been in a good frame of mind while the Sox were digging themselves a hole.

Since John Henry and company took over, these have been the absolutely best years to be a Sox fan.  But I have to admit that before this golden era I spent over 50 years (1949 to 2002) rooting for a team that would always find a way to extend the can't win a WS streak, which lasted 86 years.  I even had an uncle who lived to be 90 but never saw the Sox win a WS.

So, please, spare me the self congratulations.  Moreover,I don't recall anyone back in April saying that getting to the playoffs was going to be a piece of cake this year.  Anyone with any sense had to be worried.  Not defeatist.  Just worried.

    Maxi
You didn't read any of my stuff then.

As tough as the start was, I never thought for a moment we would not be where we should be.

I was honest enough to say it was troubling, and as a Sox fan since '62 I know a fair amount about the tough days.

But if you take the time to read this re-posting, there were those who threw out the season.  That was stupid.  I don't apologize one bit for saying that or for being positive we'd step up.

You might take note that others were honest enough to say it was tough, but they weren't giving up.  I didn't leave anything out.  I didn't edit it to make me seem smarter. I just re-posted it.

As far as self congratulation, it's all on the Sox, bro.  THEY did it and I believed in them from the start.  That is one reason why I leave the 0-6 thing on my posts.  It was hard.  But I didn't think for one second we were lost this season.

I won't stop saying we ought to believe, support, uplift and press on.  "Realists" only see the irritation detours cause.  They never see the benefit of staying on course.  Even with detours, YOU GET THERE.

I remember those guys talking about this team had no spark, that we might end up being like the Mets - high salaried failures, knocking the ST prep and conditioning and so on.
You were just as honest then as you are now about it being tough but not giving up the ship.
We might remember too how many NYuck trolls were having their fun at our expense.  Or so they thought.  Funny how they have calmed down to the single minded dementia of Babe ....  Frankie has even toned down.  There was a time that more trolls were posting than Sox fans.  At least we are back to our own and the few creditable NYY fans - that are baseball fans, too - that have been along for a good while.

The great thing about team sports is there are no perfect teams. All teams have weak spots. There's always room for improvement and that leaves teams open for criticism.

I live on the Patriots board and hear the same things there. It's always what have you done lately. The Sox and Pats are similar in that they have had recent success after years of disappointment and heartache.

Suddenly, success and championships are now expected! Failure is not an option! So when the Patriots lose a game or two or the Red Sox go on a losing streak, the critics come out. And they are vocal.

I'm like you Yaz. I'm just relaxed and enjoying the ride.
