    Revamped Bull Pen

I wonder if Theo will remind us again how

    Bobby Jenks

    Dan Wheeler

    Matt Abliers

    and

    Denny Reyes

will be key contributors to the team this year?

    Re: Revamped Bull Pen

If you look at Wheelers recent numbers with the Rays there is no way this could have been predicted. Jenks was overpaid to be a Paps backup, bad signing. I'm not sure that they expected Albers to have to be a key contributor.

And Reyes?  the only lefty who headed north after ST?

Bullpens change year to year, for EVERY team...they are hit and miss.

besides, not ONE of them contributed in the 2nd half?  are you going to give Theo a pass on this one?

BPs are always a gamble.  Usually a team that's in the hunt can address it through trades.  This year, however, they had to pich up a starter.

besides, regardless of how good the BP coulda/shoulda/woulda have been, if the starting pitchers have an era north of 5.0, you aren't going to win many games.

    Re: Revamped Bull Pen

Regarding the pitching and the bullpen, the true mistake which was made was leaving Aceves in the bullpen and starting Wakefield so often. Sure, you want to see a guy reach his 200th win, but look at where that has the rest of the team now? Probably missing the playoffs this year.

The argument had been that Wakefield would not be as proficient out of the pen as Aceves. He was not as proficient as a starter either. The answers should have been to not put Wake in the pen and to not start him.

Albers was solid until the end of year. Perhaps he has a tired arm or something but still a good bullpen piece. Look at Bard too. He as rock solid until recent. Not much different than Albers. Trever Miller should have been used more often. Weiland should have never saw a start this year and the same is true about A. Miller.

Jenks & Reyes, that was just pure stupidity by Theo. Albers  Tito just threw his arm off ( hint if he is 30 lbs overweight he wont be able to pitch all year)  Wheeler that  was just Tito not understanding pitching

    Re: Revamped Bull Pen

I think a new approach to the bull pen is needed.  They need to use younger guys and let them develop.  For example, Weiland is projected as a middle reliever; put him in that role.  He's been pretty good for 2 innings (30 pitches) lately, then poof.  So next year, he becomes your guy in the 5th - 7th innings.  If you are lucky,  he develops into a setup guy.  If not, so what.  Guys like Albers are what they are, they are not going to get any better.  Young guys just might.

Theo doesn't get a pass...he also did make the deal for Morales and signed Aceves....the greatest issue with the Sox pen was that it has been over exposed...due to ineffective and injured starters not carrying their expected load...
