    Ryan Verdugo

The Sox acquired minor league journeyman LHSP Ryan Verdugo from Kansas City today for cash.

Cue all the threads who think every move must be a blockbuster.

I have no idea why they got Verdugo, whose future with the Sox isn’t much brighter than mine.  Howevre, in the interest of over-speculating, let’s assume he was acquired to pitch in Pawtucket because one of the SPs there is in a potential deal.  They certainly didn’t get him to pitch in Boston.  The guy is strictly organizational filler, and that’s all his career has been so far.

If ithe Sox are dealing one of Ranaudo, Workman, Barnes or Webster, this deal has the potential to be pretty good.   A more likely scenario is Peavy being dealt shortly, and Verdugo taking over for, say, Workman in Pawtcuket to prevent the “trickle down” promotions the Sox just don’t want to do right now.

A final possibility is the LH Verdugo assuming a relief role to fill a void indirectly for the departure of Andrew Miller.

Or they could just be spending their Rich Hill cash.

    It is to ponder….

Whatever the reason, is this is a sign of them trying to ready themselves for some other move. At some point in time you have to move the excess players from the organization who have not shown enough promise or who have stalled in their growth. So maybe this was just KC clearing their excess.

You have to field a team at all levels, and this move could signal their willingness to move some of their pitchers from Pawtucket.  Whether it's up to Boston, or out of town some of those are out of Pawtucket by the end of this month.

Move Workman (in a trade), not much upside, and he's lately no mystery to either minor or major league hitters.

This is probably a move to take a guy off KC's roster for something since they had to make room for Jason Frasor.  Either that or the Sox beat the yanks to signing this guy.  They have been bottom feeding lately.

He has a better arm than Elena Verdugo. I'll give him that much.

    Stabbed by Foulke.
