He's had a tough go of it, personally and professionally. Hope this is the start of things turning around, for him

    Schilling: Cancer is in remission
By Peter Abraham / Globe Staff

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling announced on Wednesday that his cancer is in remission.

Schilling spread the news via social media.

“As of yesterday I am in remission. Start the 5-year clock!” he wrote on Twitter.

On Facebook he wrote, “To the many, many amazing folks at Dana Farber, [Brigham and Women’s Hospital] and [Massachusetts General Hospital], thank you and to the amazing team these last 5 months. I’ve been told my cancer is in remission, start the 5-year clock.”

Schilling, 47, announced in February that he was fighting cancer but has not revealed other details. He has since undergone at least two surgeries along with chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Schilling pitched 20 years in the majors — four for the Red Sox — and won 216 games. The righthander was a six-time All-Star and part of three World Series champions.

Schilling lives with his wife, Shonda, and four children in Massachusetts and was working for ESPN as an analyst at the time of his diagnosis. It is uncertain when he will return to the network.
