Is this assuming Theo takes the Cubs GM job?  It must be, because no other GM would be stupid enough to take on Lackey at 18 per.

    What's postage on a 200 Lb. package?

Better idea: let's send the Cubs a sympathy card instead.

I'd trade Lackey back to the Angels for 3 stained Rally Monkey T-Shirts.

Speaking of the Cubs, why didn't Theo ever get involved with trying to get Garza?
    He's tough and playoff tested.

You might be surprised but Lackey might be better off pitching in a non pressure town and the national league. However how about trading him to Houston for Wandy Rodriguez? There has to be another team willing to make a trade for a pitcher who has had success in the bigs.

Re: send lackey to the cubs

Getting a little real here, this is what the money looks like:

Zambrano still owed $39M over two years unless the team getting him avoids an IP option, in which case it is $20M

Lackey is $45M over 3 years unless Lackey misses time to elbow surgery. In which case it will be $45.7M over 4 years.

So the money moving is only about $6M difference in all likelihood.

So what do you have here? Lackey who has been a disappointment in Boston , may have elbow issues that could net a team an extra year at MLB minimum. Lackey's biggest issue beyond stinking it up this year is his facial expressions.

Or Zambrano who is a clubhouse poison and has been lousy too for a long time.

Personally I wouldn't do the deal, but it actually has some appeal to the Cubs. If they can't swap bad contracts they are at the pint where they are going to cut this guy and be on the hook for $39M. As counter inituative as it sounds Lackey for $6.5M more isn't such a bad deal.

Lackey for Zito might make sense as I believe Lackey could at least get by in the NL.  Sort of like Penny did a couple seasons back when we got rid of him.  Problem though was Penny was signed for a year and Lackey is signed forever.  No they will attempt to put another attempt into fixing him.  It's not physical.  I think he has a focus problem especially with his wife having her issues.  You gotta give him a chance.

I don't think aside from personal opinion there is any way to say that Lackey's issues aren't physical.

This guy has had elbow issues in his past, serious enough that his contract has a pre-existing clause in it. He already had to be shut down and take a cortisone shot earlier in the year.

His wife's health may well be an additional mitigating factor but I wouldn't just discount his health either.

fivekatz, I don't think anyone but Lackey really knows the truth.  I'm hoping there is a specialist out there we send John to in the off season that can either confirm or dismiss and physical issues with his arm.  If hes healthy and simply can't cut it Theo will have his hands full unloading him to beef up our staff.

Pitchers are tough to confirm or dismiss injury. By the time they get to Lackey's age and IP not many have no signs of damage to either their elbow or shoulder. How much it impairs performance varies as does how lasting the issues may be to performance.

Think back now to Pedro's career. He pitched at a pretty high level with a lot of damage to his labrum and rotor cuff until both blew up.

Clement is a different extreme. Every MRI and other step the RS were taking did not show structural damage to either the labrum or rotor cuff. But when Dr. Andrews went it the area via invasive procedure both were in shreds. The damage was so severe his career was effectively over.

It would be nice if these things were more black and white. But I think the RS have to take a bath on the guy or commit to him but hopefully as the 5 starter with a fall back plan, rather than the 3 starter the envisioned when they signed him.

This is down side of signing FA pitching.

I totally agree, John at best should be our #5.  We need one more top tier pitcher to join Clay, Jon and Josh next season but will the money be there without losing possibly David or Pap.  A trade maybe?

Can you believe Lackey is pitching against the Yankees Sunday, along with Wake, in the doubleheader?  Omg, what's wrong with these people . . .
