I've traveled those American roads quite a bit myself during that same period. Always had a place in my heart for Bo's and freights. I vividly recall BO camps near the railroad's in Oregon.

A jerry reed hobo song. Nice. The first time I rode a freight train I went from Roseville CA to Eugene OR. Speaking of dixie here's a song from the country music capitol of California

You can't go wrong with Hank, that's for sure. My Grandfather used to work river drives back up in Maine. That song really brings me back home. Here's another great Hank song.

I respect Monroe because he fathered the movement. But I think traditional bluegrass is bland as far as it's music form.
I prefer to listen to UR other favorite:

Well, I have to say I'm a big Johnny Cash fan, but those are songs I've never heard before. I'm guessing they're not from his TV show. -

Thompson had a pure country voice, no doubt. But I think Snow, Cash, Hank and this guy are are true country/western legends:

Harness, you and Carnie certainly lay depth, character and insight to this site!!!!!
Following your last several posts was something else ...
Couldn't help but think of Guthrie ... and I'll be durned if the name of that song just slipped my mind ... "Good morning, America, how are ya? Hey, don't ya know me? I'm your native son. I'm the train they call the city of New Orleans ... I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done .... past graveyards of old black men..."

Thanks Harness ... my ears dd a double take .... :o) Thought Arlo must have been recorded with a cold ... then realized it was Willie ...
If you can believe it, I'd probably know nothing of this venue had it not been for my grade school teachers in Rochester, NH (Early 60's). We were given enough direction toward the Guthries (father and son) and folk music as an art form that it has stayed with me all the following days. It helped me to appreciate all forms of expression ... (my mother and brothers being artistic didn't hoit.)
I most commonly to listen the likes of James Taylor and Chicago... but I enjoy a wide variety of others. Country, folk, R&B, some jazz, gospel (in it's many forms) of course ... I can even enjoy hip-hop fusion. Straight hip-hop jangles my sensibilties though ...
Counted the cars on the trains as they went by ... but never hopped one. Wander lust applies though. Lived in four countries and eight states ... :oD -

Speaking of CHICAGO, I've always wondered what this song meant:

Also, S.Y., I caught you retort to Softy on UR HAPPY EASTER thread.
Very enlightening!
What did you think of REVELATION:

:o) I never did drugs, Harnes. Not "recreationally," at least. On seizure meds since 1973, but I resisted taking them. However, that very clean cut group on the stage is not what my mind recalls. Four brothers and four 1st cousins were in on the early-ish parts of the drug culture of the '60's and '70's. I SAW a lot in half way houses, beaten down old victorians full of hippies (I looked the part, but was a Jesus Freak), communes and so forth ... this was almost the MaryJane smoker's and other tripper's anthem ... should I do some more... It's late but I might just have time (or energy) for one more trip, one more lid.
Glad you caught the Light message!
Waylon's Revelation .... rips one's heart out, esp. when not ready for it!
I've enjoyed pulling practical jokes on friends and/or those close to me. Esp. if it elicits a scream or two I've told folks several times that it's been my job for quite a while when they say, "You just scared the Hell out of me!"
.... Willie and Waylon and the boys .... -

LOL I guess I got a little verbose and perhaps obtuse. Two of my strongest characteristics.
.... sitting on a floor in a room (possibly already hazy from MJ smoke), at about 3:34 or 3:35 AM, wondering if I (the singer) should take another toke, or whatever drug is on his/her mind ....
Rare night ... not making donuts ... shop closed for a day after Holiday holiday ...
But a great day! -
