Some details on Pedroia's thumb surgery

ORLANDO, Fla. — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia did not require a graft to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. The surgery was done earlier today in Scottsdale, Ariz., by Dr. Donald Sheridan. "It was the less complicated of the two possibilities. So that was good news," general manager Ben Cherington said. "It sounded like everything went well." Cherington said the Red Sox are "fully confident" Pedroia will be ready for the start of next season. "Spring training, because he's Dustin Pedroia and doesn't have to worry about making the team, we'll see where he is. If we need to buy time, we will," Cherington said. "We'll know more in a few weeks." Pedroia tore the ligament on Opening Day when he slid headfirst into first base against the Yankees. He played the entire season, starting 159 games. Pedroia hit .301 with a .372 on-base percentage. But his .415 slugging percentage was the lowest of his career.

Re: Some details on Pedroia's thumb surgery

Pedroia should more than be ready for spring training, and his injury should make every other player aware of the fact that there is really no reason to slide into first base unless the throw is down the line towards home plate and he has to avoid the first baseman's tag.

A greater chance of injury (like Pedroia), slows the runner down (no track guys slide at the finish line) and can confuse the umpire who may not expect a player to slide in order to beat a regular, routine throw from an infielder.

I think that I would fine a player who slides into first base on such plays as the one Pedroia got hurt on.

Pedroia always puts his heart out in each game.  After each game, his jersey always has dirt and tear on it.   LOL

What an animal the guy is.  Injured his thumb on Opening Day, played 98% of the games, batted .301 and helped win the championship.  Amazing.

which is exactly one of the reasons why jacoby will resign and stay with the red sox. those two are alot closer than us ordinary fans realize. for one thing, they sit right next to each other in the locker room. by the grace of the man up stairs, we were able to get another "trot nixon" red sox dirt dog. just my .02 cents guys.

It is good that they did not have to replace the tendon as they do with TJ surgery.  This will decrease the time it takes to recover.
