I think that Ben had your idea in mind all along, good Bill.  Cook looks good and can help us right where we need him.   Bard goes back to the pen and Cook fills his spot.

[QUOTE]Build the strongest possible rotation first. Then work on the pen. Don't put a better pitcher in the pen and a lesser one in the rotation.

Thank you!!!  This is exactly what I've been saying and exactly why Bard should start.

Your #4 starter is way more important than your closer.  200 innings vs 70 innings.

Bard has four pitches and ace potential.  he should start.

Find a closer, they aren't hard to find.  Give someone like Barnes a shot.  You can trade 2.5 million dollars cash for a solid reliever.

If there's no place for bard in the rotation and they need relievers, trade Bard for relievers.

The worst possible thing they could do to Bard is to put him in the BP for a while and then move him back into the rotation later this season.

Bard has the potential to be the best starter on the staff, and he's under team control for four more years.  Finding out if he's that guy is far more valuable than saving a run a game for 3 or 4 starts.

The best place for Cook is in the bullpen - he can pitch long relief when a starter struggles and he can come in with runners on base to try to induce a ground ball.  There's no way he should replace a Buchholz, Bard or Doubront right now - if there is any short-term benefit at all it is massively out-weighed by the long-term needs of the club.

The question is : Will Cook be a better starter than Bard ?  If the answer is yes , then do it.  If the answer is no , then don't do it.  Don't weaken the rotation to improve the bullpen.
