seems like the only thing lavarnway and fisk will have in common

is that they both played more games for another team

    I appreciate the single.

How about doing something about 4 SBs in 4 innings?

Just in case you hadn't noticed, a single is one base, and 4 SBs is four bases.

Lavarnway does look much better at the plate.  Nice oppo field RBI single there.  Future DH possibility if not a good enough defensive catcher.

    Re:

I would think that Lavarnway should already own a first baseman's mitt and that he should already have seen some practice there as there has been no question that his bat has been ahead of his glove (behind the plate) for a long time now.

The Red Sox do not seem to promote much versatility situations for any of their young players which is understandable to some degree, but still confusing to me.  I often wonder if other organizations keep their best minor leaguers at only one position in the same manner.

It would seem to make more sense to have looked at these guys at more than one defensive position, in my opinion.  Bogaerts should have had more reps at third base before being called up as an example.

With Ross signed for another year to back up Saltalamacchia (if they can re-sign him) Lavarnway could be a very likely option at first base in 2014.

Fisk would have thrown out both runners on a double steal.

He lost some weight as well as started concentrating on his catching defense. Put the weight back on and grab a 1b mit this winter is what Id tell him.

It was more than that too, his weight really yo yo'd bad, going up and down a couple times.  And it wasn't good weight, he was really sick.  Couple that with focusing on his defense and you can maybe not justify but at least explain away his subpar offensive performance.

I still don't like him as a full time catcher (defensively).  But if his bat can play, then he could be a good part of this team as a C/DH/1B type.

    Re:

Lavarnway has a ceiling of being a decent back up catcher, there isn't anything wrong with that.

he does not hit nearly well enough to play first, he does hit well enough to offset his average D as a back up catcher.

he will be around the league for another 5 to 7 years and see more minor league time.

    That's it.
