Like I said on the game day post, he is a little better than what we have now but clearly the guy is on the decline...too many walks and not enough strikeouts

Very good deal. Thornton could help fill the gap left by Miller. Jacobs is young and has some potential, but has not really impressed so far.

    Stabbed by Foulke.

This also helps with the 40 man crunch next year because Jacobs is rule 5 draft eligible next year

Just the type of deal we should have made. We might have lost Jacobs to rule 5 anyways.

I'd like to see another trade or two like this coming up.

Matt Thornton is yet another former Mariner who became an All Star only after leaving Seattle (joining David Ortiz, Adrian Beltre, Rafael Soriano, Asdrubal Cabrera, Raul Ibanez and Steve Delabar among active players). The Mariners drafted Thornton in the first round of the June 1998 draft.

you can add Adam Jones to that list too...Maybe the M's should consider a new GM?

This was a good trade for both Sox clubs. Thornton wasnt going to get much in return anyway.

Adam Jones and George Sherrill ... and Shin-Soo Choo was left off the All Star roster again this year.

Of those departures, the current Seattle general manager was responsible only for the Steve Delabar trade (and seeing Adrian Beltre leave as a free agent).

    And Omar Vizquel.

But surprisingly, not Shin Soo Choo, who for some reason, has never been named to an All Star team...

Seattle GM Bill Bavasi traded Adam Jones on February 8, 2008; the Mariners named Jack Zduriencik general manager in October 2008.

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jonesad01.shtml#trans

Zduriencik has traded away Cliff Lee, Doug Fister, Brandon Morrow, Michael Pineda, Erik Bedard, Jason Vargas, Mike Morse, J.J. Putz, Mike Carp and John Jaso, among others.

It will be interesting to see how he does. He will need to show us something to have a chance at at $6m renewal.

Or do you think we let him go strait into FA with Miller back next year?

Zduriencik has little to show for all of the above. One has to wonder if his days in Seattle are numbered? In search of young impact hitters he's traded away what amounts to a formitable rotation. The Fister trade is perhaps the one that I still don't why understand they made it.

Thornton has a $1M club option buyout. If I read the numbers correctly, the Red Sox will be on the hook for $2.47M this year and $1M next year, assuming they let him walk, which they will at that price.
