Yes I have become spoiled as a Sox fan.  I am not expecting a WS win every year, just a shot to get there is what I want...a reason to cheer for them every year and not have to hear the term "bridge year"...with the money the Sox put up for a team there should never be a bridge year or a 4-year no playoff berth.

Anytime you can get a player who will start for you for less than 3 yrs on the FA market your doing well. Unless injured or coming off terrible year are going to have hard time getting for 1-2 yrs. Ben in no-win, not a good FA class, but if he does nothing he's a terrible GM, did next best thing found some guys who will contribute and play but all less than 3 yrs. No comes the hard part finding starting pitching. Must come away w/ at least one starter that can plug in immediately McCarthy/Marcum/Jackson/Lohse and hopefully another that might be more insurance or reach a Lannan/Pelfrey type. RS have a lot of ?'s in rotation Lester/Lackey/Doubront all have to be included here not sure what you'll get from either one, could be good could be bad.

Agreed that the free agent market isn't great this year, outside of Hamilton/Greinke, neither of whom the Sox bring on.

One writer explained the Victorino deal as giving him 4 years worth of money for 3 years.  That sounds about right to me, especially given recent Sox FA history.  Now let's focus on the rotation.

Theo obviously did some good things in Boston. But, he broke from the script. He stopped considering OBP, and broke the hard-fast rule about signing starting pitchers to big contracts, who are over 30. As a result...he signed Carl Crawford and John Lackey. That, along with failing to re-sign Adrian Beltre, were the main reasons for his downfall.

If the FA market is buy, why then go out and spend close to $80mil. on mediocre talent? Why not rebuild, with a eye to eventually reload, and put that money in the farm system?

I would venture to say that, after shedding long expensive vet contracts this summer, and then picking up a couple relatively-short-for-free-agent 3 year expensive vet contracts this week, considering that the best prospects are at least a year if not two away from the bigs, that rebuild is exactly what they are doing, big market style.

Do you think that these signings make the Sox appreciably better? I can strain to see the logic in paying Napoli, a catcher/firstbasemen, and a right-handed hitter who can hit for power...and a guy who has hit well in Fenway. But, the Victorino signing makes no sense. Why not just keep Jake? He's likely going to have a big year in this, his contract year. Get the best out of him, and maybe get a trade deadline deal for him, for a slew of top prospects?

Why not indeed.  The only way they are moving Ellsbury is if they can get a front line starter or top shortstop.  Victorino allows for a lot of different scenarios:  Keep Ellsbury, SV plays all important right field (a Sox liability for two years running).  If Ellsbury is centerpiece for top pitcher, Victorino slides to center and, while dropoff in offense is significant, that is the sacrifice, better than having no option at all, and he is arguable a better centerfielder.  In any case Flexibility is the key word.  Makes a lot of sense (besides the ludicrous free agency inflated salary).

The Red Sox traded away substantial talent to free up payroll at a time when new television revenues have inflated prices in the free agent market.

The contracts of Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford might not look so bad in the near future.

Beckett's contract never looked bad to me.  His performance looked pretty bad last year.  But the contract was inflated-market rate,

I doubt Crawford's deal ever looks anything other than bad.

Anytime you sign a pitcher to big money, you're taking a big risk. Injuries happen, as with Beckert...and rare is the pitcher that can string together 5-6 really good years. Josh at least did something for the Sox to earn his big pay-day, as he pitched them to a championship in 2007.

These are the market prices. Did they overpay a bit for Shane V maybe but they also don't have to give up compensation for him. Shane gives them flexability going forward being to play all 3 outfield positions. It also allows them not to have to rush Bradley into the majors.

    Wrong again.

    That honor belongs to Larry.

I see, your one of those Ben apologists that says bad moves are LL's fault and good moves are to Ben's credit.

Ben hired BV. That's what GM's do, hire and fire managers.

are you slow?? ben had his manager picked out.... remember dale sveum?! uppermanagement said no and after reports of LL talking to BV at an event MAGICALLY BV has an interview and gets the job.

    get real

    [/QUOTE]

and sveum ended up in what place last year in Chi? apparently ben has a hard on only for last place managers...more blundering

while managers do play a role in their teams performance, ultimately the players are the ones the wins and losses fall on. you can have the best manager on your team but if it consists of bad players (for whatever the reasons) theres nothing he could do.

you think if phil jackson went to coach the bobcats they would be NBA champions in 2012-13? no way.

    Re: Sox are Unbelievably Stupid!

Boston is rebuilding...mostly in the farm system!!  Their farm system were so thin cuz Theo gave away so many prospects, and now they got no one down there to be a ready major league level player.  Buy players is to buy some time for Boston to get some guys down in the farm system to be a ready major league player.  You ll see as many two to four newly homegrown players that is ready to play for the 2014 season!!
