Sox hire Juan Nieves as pitching coach

    Didn't see this coming.From Boston.com:

The Red Sox have selected White Sox bullpen coach Juan Nieves to become their next pitching coach.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports had the news first. The news is a bit of a surprise given an ESPN report that Baltimore minor league pitching director Rick Peterson was the favorite.

The Red Sox also considered Marlins pitching coach Randy St. Claire and Royals executive Steve Foster, a former bullpen coach.

Nieves, 47, spent five years in Chicago working under respected pitching coach Don Cooper. He was a pitching coach in the White Sox system for the nine years prior to that. He also spent four years coaching in the Yankees organization.

Nieves graduated from Avon Old Farms in Connecticut before pitching parts of three seasons in the majors.

So far, all of the coaches have lived in CT.

Might as well hire Linda McMahon too.  LOL

This hire is because a top notch pitching coach like Peterson can not work for a manager who was a former top notch pitching coach !!!

Its an interesting concept that they are looking at possibly hiring 2 hitting coaches. There may be another one announced in the coming days/weeks.

That is not smart at all......  Pitchers need to hear one goooood voice and not be confused by multiples !!

Because MLB pitchers are obviously too stupid to be able to interpret more than one point of view. Brilliant reasoning from the BDC champion of logic.

Well Carnie,  If you have ever played sports/baseball, then you would know what a pitcher needs to hear and who he hears it from !!!

More and more teams are going with multiple pitching coaches and multiple hitting coaches.  The Sox plan on bringing in 2 hitting coaches.

I agree with this comment. Nieves has years of experience working with pitchers so why not.

The next move for the sox coaching staff with Madagan gone to texas the need to get a good batting coach is very important now.

It is getting like football , where they have almost as many coaches as they do players.  What is next , a quality control for fielding coach ? Or an assistant bench coach ?  Or a bunting coordinator ?  Bottom line is : The players have to be receptive to the coaches ideas.  Otherwise it is just window dressing and unnecessary overhead on the payroll.

    In response to mryazz's comment:

2 pitching coaches and 2 hitting coaches. makes sense. LH pitchers and RH pitchers each have a coach. the same for LH and RH hitters.

also, 2 bench coaches allows the manager to rub two heads at the same time. preferrably, the bench coaches are bald.

plus, it reduces the unemployment numbers.

    smart thinking! mryazz 2016!!!
