it would be interesting to know what (if any) offers in previous years (when his stock was higher)  that sox FO turned down.

he could be a case where new scenery does wonders.

Interestingly enough he's having a very good spring with the bat.

Deal with a team that has good Prospects in A and A+, almost like getting a Draft pick.

Not a surprise, really. Doubt we get too much for him now with how much his stock has dropped. Hope it works out for him somewhere.

I hope they don't deal him for scraps.  I think he has potential as a 1B/DH type.  And we will need a 1B/DH type before we know it.

Agree. He shouldn't be dealt just to deal him. Keep him as back-up 1B,DH or 3rd (garbage time) catcher. That bat could come in handy down the road.

I wonder what we could get for Lava & Carp combined.

Ryan Lavarnway has one option remaining, according to SoxProspects:

Not surprising at all. He batted .299 last year, albeit in a short stint in the ML. He has hit the baseball well wherever he has been given a fair shot to play regularly. Unfortunately, the Red Sox never gave him that shot with their team.

Lavarnway has VALUE ......  Ben has a lot of "value chips", Lavarnway, Carp, Nava, Middlebrooks and a very deep pitching group !!!!

funny Billy......  Never heard anybody in Boston argue that C. FISK was a "value chip" to be played & discarded.

Most teams would do whatever it took to keep the next up & coming C. FISK, especially if he's costing you next to NOTHING.  ABSOLUTELY ZERO reason to play, deal, discard, pawn, unload, dump, et. al, the next FISK!  NONE!

That really doesn't sound too good if your Lavarnway. If they're not going to use him after all this time, maybe he deserves a shot with another team.

I've been saying for a while, and more adamant lately that Lavarnway is on the block and is likely gone at some point this system.

His skill set has somewhat diminished, or gone dormant and Swihart/Vasquez is the clear future, and RIGHT NOW Butler is probably a MLB ready back up catcher, and while that may be the most he will be....he makes Lavarnway redundant on a roster with Ross/AJ/Napoli/Nava/Carp who can all play C/1B.

Lavarnway has had chances.  His defensive work behind the plate has been poor by all accounts.  He may be better suited to be a 1B/DH.  But there hasn't been any need for A DH with Ortiz.
