not that it will work but

I'm thinking it's more of a bargaining ploy

sox will have to give up more talent 2 get hammels

than they can get back by trading lester

and we know how they feel about giving up talent

If this was a move that telling Lester they are looking at other options as well, Lester would probably feel less guilty to leave Boston.  They need to stop pissing Lester off.

I hope this talk is just posturing, but it is beginning to have the feeling of disaster written all over it.  If the Sox really want to try to keep Lester they should make his agent a serious offer now and see where they are at (if they haven't already done so).

This smells LL. He's a chucklehead. Might have been part of 3 WS, but he is out there. He thinks this is going to make Lester and his reps think. This is last thing the Sox should do to Lester.
Lester has all the leverage, unless he gets hurt. If it is LL, what is he thinking?

There's 2 weeks until the trade deadline.

The Sox are probably scouting a ton of players right now.

    It's call due diligence...

like people said, it is a back up plan if Lester leaves, and Hammel can replace him.  But like a fan up there saying, Sox will have give up talents to get him. So that is alot to lose cuz if Lester leave after this season, and then we will see Sox losing Lester along with prospects.  That is too many guys to lose.  Maybe Sox may not lose too much prospects if they are willing to eat up all of Hammels salary.

But really, the best way to resign Lester and save all these prospects.  Do not know what is his problem.  Thought the Sox ups the offer from 70 millions dollars or something like that this past week.  Maybe there were never a talk between two sides.

I'm not opposed to having Lester and Hamels for 2015.

If they go 5 + an option for $135---he will turn it down.

Work out a deal with Oakland---let him get another ring and he will be a FA and the A's get a pick--we get something we need.--he and the A's get what they need.

The A's don't get a pick.  Players have to be with the same team the whole season to receive compensation.  The A's also just traded for 2 starting pitchers.  Why would they trade for Lester?

A's just got Smarjia and Hammel.  and they don't have good enough prospects any more to land Lester.

I doubt its gesturing. The Red Sox are simply doing their due diligence in scouting another good SP. There is no reason they could not have BOTH Lester AND Hamels starting for them next year, especially if Lackey and his team friendly contract are traded.

WE ARE ALL JUST POPPYSEEDS IN THE BAKERY OF LIFE

The A's wouldn't get a pick under that scenario. You can only give a QO to a player who was on your team the whole year.

If the Oakland A's trade for Jon Lester, they do not get a pick if he signs elsewhere.
