    Sports salary question

    Last year by living in Fl versus living in his home state he was able to keep 8 million more of the $56 million he made. 

    A MLB FA saved 9% of his 12 million salary this coming year by leaving his former team.

    How much do you see players now looking towards where they play and the additional income by playing in a state that has no or very littlat additional taxes on people who make millions?

    Me I see many players using it as a bargaining chip. If I play in CA pay 15% if I play in FL I pay 0% more.

    I read that Miami players traded to Toronto were miffed about moving to a locale with higher taxes.

    It's France's new 75% tax bracket that'd have the hillbilly millionaires weeping and moaning. 

     



    Hey their last president is leaving the country because of that 75% tax as well as their most famous actor who moved to Germany. 

    BTW it was Tiger Woods who moved to Fl. And Fl does not have any tax that is over done even house taxes are not bad

    I dont think you need to do an academic study to know that if you have the ability to live in a different state and pay less in taxes, most people would do it. This issue for your average Joe, is that he is tied to where he lives by three things....one family.....two, his employment and three nostalgia of their youth.....for a professional athlete, #1 and # 2 are basically void, because they have the ability to move the family also or travel frequently enough to visit.....and #3 for a large % of atheletes, who came from other countries or from the inner cities doesnt exist either.....so it just comesdown to a business decision..As more and more states eliminate Income Tax(and I think 3 more are proposing it currently), it is going to put more and more pressure on the others, because businesses and large income earners who support their econoies in greater ways than just tax revenues will flee in even greater #'s.

    I do not understand how some athletes can easily blow all of their money away.  

    Mike Tyson, Scottie Pippen, Allen Iverson, Curt Schilling, etc.  

    I read somewhere that Allen Iverson paid $10,000 a month just in dry cleaning.  WTF?!?   LOL

    IMO  it is many times about the posse they have. Those HS and college buddies that siphon off of the player as well as they have been given everything since HS that they think it will last forever. 

    I would not put Curt in the exact same boat as his was a business screw up versus the others just blowing on stuff and not watching their money handlers and probably not knowing anything about money.

    Yes, but we do have the 2nd highest gasoline tax and tobacco tax next to NY. No state income tax but believe me, they make it up the revenue somehow.

    The sad thing is that we are even having discussions like this.

    Remember when the NFL had a final game ( and it was usually in Green Bay or Chicago in cold temperatures) and it was just a championship game to determine what team would hoist a trophy? ...Now it's damn close to the biggest spectacle on this planet. A showcase for pop singers, commercialism and you name it. The actual game takes a back seat to all the unending analytic posturing of the commetators, former greats and experts on strategy. If only the game was as long as all the speculation and the hype....but the average NFL game contains a whole 11 minutes of live ball time.....think about it 11 MINUTES!

    Baseball is becoming more soap opera than a game. We spend endless hours debating salary, clubhouse chemistry, front office strategy and whether guys are on steroids. Is A-Rod dating that rich celebrity?...is Hamilton drinking again?....how does a clown like Napoli get $13 million?

    Shouldn't we concentrate on the actual gameplay?...how many discussions do we have about actual plays made in games, opposed to stuff that happens off the field?

    The more you think of it, the more you realize that T.V. and the entertainment business has hijacked sports, taken from the real sports fan in order to sell it to the casual fan....to get more visibilty , higher ratings , so that more people are watching that Dominoes Pizza ad, and more people are buying pizza...

    ..sports today is used a vehicle for commercial means, the game is the come-on for what they really want you to watch, the ads....commercials or banners plastered all over the walls, boards and scoreboard.

    That's why they are getting paid so damn much money, not because they are good athlets, but because they are good salesmen for corporate America.

    Hence, the Ken Burns production of, "When it was a Game". I love watching that. Before Free Agency and Collective Bargaining. When ballplayers were regular folks and even your neighbors.

    Fred Kendall lived right down the street from me. He and my older brother were friends
