SS - Rico Petrocelli
3B - Joe Foy
LF - Yaz
CF - Reggie Smith
RF - Tony Conigliaro Ken Harrelson after Tony C got Beaned
Super sub Jerry Adair (edited corrected spelling)
OF Jose Tartabull (edited corrected spelling)
IF Dalton Jones

Names that I remember! Also an Honorable mention of Billy Rohr Who came within 1 out of no hitting the Yankees and then pitched another complete game 6-1 win against the same Yankees beating Whitey Ford then Mel Stottlemire. He only won 1 more game in his brief 3 year career. -

Actually the catcher was Fall River , Massachusetts native Russ GIBSON ..not RUSS NIXON.
For people who are hung up on correct spelling Jose TARTABULL, Jerry ADAIR.
Notable relievers should include John Wyatt. -

Thanks Zill it is always nice to have someone get your back. My Foggy Brain meant Gibson and is the culprit behind the sloppy spelling. Did forget about John Wyatt and you are correct that he should be mentioned. Probably as important as Lyle. -

Also a catcher named Mike Ryan played some, and I think you'll find Dave Morehead was a starter. Dan Osinski and Gary Waslewski pitched out of the bullpen.
These were the days when AL pitchers batted, and there was no such thing as a closer or set-up man. Pitchers stayed in until they got tired or just plain stunk out the joint....those were truly the days. Games were sometimes played in 2 hours! -

The usual line-up that I can remember was:
2B Mike Andrews
3B Joe Foy
LF Carl Yastrzemski
RF Tony Conigliaro
1B George Scott
CF Reggie Smith
SS Rico Petrocelli
C Mike Ryan
P Jim Lonborg, Lee Stange, Gary Bell, Darrell Brandon, Jose Santiago.
What a great year that was! Carl Yastrzemski was a real life Roy Hobbs.

I will never forget Russ Gibson because when we dine at Applebees in Fall River, Ma. ( the city where I am right at this moment), he along with Greg Gagne are pictured on the wall as "hometown heroes." Also when I visit the Applebees in my hometown of Dartmouth, Ma. , Brian Rose is honored as a "hometown hero." I think that it is really cool the this restaurant chain does this. -

It really sounds like a great achievement, to "almost no-hit" the Yankees. But, many of us forget that the Yankees really stunk back then.
I never miss an opportunity to bring this up , especially when Yankee fans are around. The Yankees, when I was a kid( around 1967-1975) were not a very good team at all. I think Bobby Murcer, Roy White and Mel Stottlemyre were the only guys they had that were close to "stars." -

Manager: Red Schoendenst
LF Brock
SS Maxvill
1B Cepeda
RF Maris
CF Flood
3B Shannon
2B Javier
C McCarver
Pitchers included Gibson, Carlton (Steve) and Briles
Thats about all I can remember, although I do remember that somewhere during that season Jimy Williams played for them too...but don't know the details...just remember him talking about it once while he was manager of the Sox. -

NY had 4 former RS on their roster and still had Mantle, Ford, Stotllemyer and ended up 72-90-1---20 games out. Still trying to figure out how they played 163 games???
RS won season series 10-6
In hindsight Lonborg should had not pitched the 7th game should had been Santiago or Morehead. Lonborg on 2 days rest probably the only mistake Williams made all year.# Pitchers Height Weight Throws Bats Date Of Birth 18 Steve Barber 6-00 200 Left Left 1938-02-22 56 Jim Bouton 6-00 185 Right Right 1939-03-08 24 Al Downing 5-11 177 Left Right 1941-06-28 16 Whitey Ford 5-10 181 Left Left 1928-10-21 39 Steve Hamilton 6-07 195 Left Left 1935-11-30 40 Bill Monbouquette 5-11 195 Right Right 1936-08-11 48 Cecil Perkins 6-00 175 Right Right 1940-12-01 19 Fritz Peterson 6-00 200 Left Both 1942-02-08 18 Hal Reniff 6-00 215 Right Right 1938-07-02 43 Dale Roberts 6-04 180 Left Right 1942-04-12 30 Mel Stottlemyre 6-02 190 Right Right 1941-11-13 22 Fred Talbot 6-02 195 Right Right 1941-06-28 54 Thad Tillotson 6-02½ 195 Right Right 1940-12-20 52 Joe Verbanic 6-00 155 Right Right 1943-04-24 58 Dooley Womack 6-00 170 Right Left 1939-08-25 # Catchers Height Weight Throws Bats Date Of Birth 50 Billy Bryan 6-04 200 Right Left 1938-12-04 38 Frank Fernandez 6-01 192 Right Right 1943-04-16 41 Jake Gibbs 6-00 185 Right Left 1938-11-07 32 Elston Howard 6-02 200 Right Right 1929-02-23 23 Bob Tillman 6-04 205 Right Right 1937-03-24 # Infielders Height Weight Throws Bats Date Of Birth 12 Ruben Amaro 5-11 170 Right Right 1936-01-06 42 Ray Barker 6-00 192 Right Left 1936-03-12 20 Horace Clarke 5-09 178 Right Both 1940-06-02 34 Mike Hegan 6-01 190 Left Left 1942-07-21 10 Dick Howser 5-08 155 Right Right 1936-05-14 26 John Kennedy 6-00 185 Right Right 1941-05-29 14 Jerry Kenney 6-01 170 Right Left 1945-06-30 7 Mickey Mantle 5-11 198 Right Both 1931-10-20 6 Charley Smith 6-00 177 Right Right 1937-09-15 47 Frank Tepedino 5-11 192 Left Left 1947-11-23 # Outfielders Height Weight Throws Bats Date Of Birth 40 Lou Clinton 6-01 185 Right Right 1937-10-13 53 Ross Moschitto 6-02 175 Right Right 1945-02-15 25 Joe Pepitone 6-02 200 Left Left 1940-10-09 11 Bill Robinson 6-03 205 Right Right 1943-06-26 17, 27 Tom Shopay 5-09½ 160 Right Left 1945-02-21 15 Tom Tresh 6-00 191 Right Both 1938-09-20 28 Steve Whitaker 6-01 187 Right Left 1943-05-07 48 Roy White 5-10 172 Right Both 1943-12-27 # Other Positions Height Weight Throws Bats Date Of Birth 49 Charlie Sands 6-02 215 Right Left 1947-12-17 1967 New York Yankees Roster -

Posted by taz1956I was listening to that game, which is pretty famous, considering the protagonists involved, and what happened that season. Let's not forget that historically great catch Yaz made in Death Valley on Tom Tresh to preserve the no-hitter at that point; Jerry Coleman lost his voice on that one. -

In Response to Re: Starting lineup for the 67 Red Sox:Too bad for Tony Kubek for the Yanks, I think he was going to be something special.
Posted by bobbysuKubek retired in '65 due to injuries, and did plenty for the Yankees beforehand. In fact, when the Yankees collapsed that yr, many pointed to the fact that it had alot to do with them no longer having Kubek, who was arguably the best SS in the AL in the early 60s, along with Aparicio. (Of course Mantle, Maris, & Howard aging out and with injuries also helped) -

I still have a scrapbook with a picture of Lou Brock glued into it. Bob Gibson was some kind of superstar from another planet and wish to God we could have gotten one more start out of Lonborg with normal days rest that year. The performance YAZ put on that year is etched in our minds forever and probably the reason a lot of us actually became "fans". He was a normal sized guy who became larger than life. -

Posted by BoomerangsdotcomYaz said they did something with the batter's eye before that game which made it very difficult to hit, and as a result, against Gibson, and I quote him "We didn't have a chance".
