Tampa Bay Rays' Alex Cobb hit in head with line drive

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher after it appeared he was hit near the right ear by a liner off the bat of Kansas City's Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning of Saturday's game.

Cobb put a hand on his head after being struck. Trainers from both teams and other medical staff immediately ran onto the field.

Cobb could be seen kicking his legs while being examined on the mound.

Players on both teams had hands on their hands as a stunned silence overtook Tropicana Field after the crowd grasped when Cobb was struck.

It came a month after Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ was also struck by a liner against the Rays and suffered a skull fracture.

They have to create some type of protective cap for these guys.  It doesn't even have to be a helmet.  Just something that fits comfortably, without much distraction, that will absorb 25% of the impact.

Or you wait until someone is killed.

That's what it took for MLB to implement the base coaches wearing helmets, Joe. Let's hope that not what it takes for something to be done, regarding the pitchers. It's a wonder it doesn't happen, more often. Best wishes to Cobb, for a fast and full recovery

Be a huge blow to the Rays if he has some kind of skull fracture and is out for the year. Good for the Sox, but an unfortunate way to gain an advantage. The Sox fan in me sees an advantage, but the human being in general hopes hes ok. Best of both would be for him to come back and say "Ive completely recovered from my injuries, but after this I want to leave baseball to pursue my lifelong dream of selling Kirby vacuum cleaners door to door".

Just wearing a batting helmet would help somewhat.

    Stabbed by Foulke.

They arent going to do that either, no pitcher will go for it dg. There is some talk of a device that fits inside the soft cap. You might see that, but that does not protect the face.

Just heard he is doing fine, resting and tweeting.  Glad he's ok, you hate to see something like that happen.

He has a mild concusion, could have been much worse.  Sports can be dangerous, I really don't see a way around this one.  Pitchers are in the line of fire, I hate hearing the thud, kid of makes me sick.
