sounds like the asking price for anyone is way too high so good, no deal is better than a bad deal

A month ago I felt and stated I didn't think there were any worthwhile moves for the Sox to make.  Mortensen stays in Boston, Lavarnway returns to Pawtucket.

Can the sox still make the playoffs?  Without Albers and Podsednick?

If you thought they could make it yesterday than you still think they can today.  If you thought they couldn't yesterday, than Breslow probably doesn't change that.

Hard to imagine they weren't interested in Pence but 2013 salary probably scared them off him.  Other than that what big moves were they going to make.  Trade prospects to margninally upgrade the pitching staff?

Sweeney would've been dealt.......  Probably no takers for Punto with his price tag.

    Rangers Acquire Ryan Dempster

The Rangers acquired Ryan Dempster from the Cubs, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.  MLB.com's Ken Gurnick and Scott Miller of CBS Sports had early word of the deal, which made it in just under the trade deadline buzzer.

They weren't going to add payroll and it's awfully hard to get better without paying.

Dempster apparently said he would only go to the Yankees or Rangers.

There are times when no deal is better than a bad deal or several bad deals.

The Sox's biggest problem is the rotation, but getting help was always going to be very difficult.

Correct.  That has been the bottom line all along, which is also why they weren't go to trade Beckett, unless someone took on his salary.  The Red Sox would not be able to replace Beckett, because of payroll, and they aren't better paying him to pitch elsewhere but still occupying payroll.

I love that the same people who bash Crawford, Lackey, and Beckett are now mad because the Sox didn't make another "big move".

What does Lackey and Beckett have to do with Greinke?  Now we have no ace for 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Blah, blah , blah Greinke couldnt survive in a big market.  When Milwaukee acquired him at the deadline last year, every game was a big game, as it was a stretch run and they were on the cusp of making the playoffs.  Under the pressure, Greinke flourished.

Blah, blah, blah rental...You cant tell me that trading for a player doesnt give you the leg up in free-agency.  You have a half-year to court the player and to build a relationship with him.

Greinke would have turned this team into a contender in 2012, 2013, 2014.  Now we have no ace.  There was only one team in the last 15 years to win a world series without a true ace (CWS)

Greinke is a top 10 pitcher in the MLB easy.  We hardly even looked into acquiring him.

Well I'm pretty sure I didn't mention Greinke but to my overall point, everyone incessently complains about the "big moves" that don't work out and then they turn around a complain about a lack of the "big move" at the deadline.

More specifically to Greinke, I don' t know how good the 3 prospects LA gave up to get him, but seldom does giving up prospects for a 2 month rental benefit the organization long term.  Really, anything short of a world series win and it isn't a good move in hindsight.  Heck, the Sox won with Gagne but would have been better off keeping Murphy.

If you won a Cy Young Award and have a career WHIP like Greinke has, uh, you do everything in your power to acquire him...The Angels got fatter and they already have 2 stalwart SPs in Weaver and Wilson and then you got Haren, whose no slouch, and Santana, whose just having a Lester type year.

Nail on the head!  Just because he is a free agent at the end of this year, doesnt make him a rental.  If you let him walk, he's a rental.  That's why you dont let him walk.  You spend the next half year courting him and building a relationship with him.  Then you pay him.

Its very hard to acquire a true ace, and we just missed our chance.  Good luck next year with 4 #3 pitchers.
