The 10 best and Worst for the Sox this year. My rankings- adjust at will.

This is how I see the 10 best and worst player situations for the Sox this year so far.  Make any adjustments you want, as we all know what opinions are like.

#10.  Best -  Reddick injects youth and life into Sox for a while.
Worst - No Dice-K.  A lot of complaints about our #5 starters.  Even with erratic pitch counts and innings, he would have helped.

#9.  Best - Bard - continues to dominate in set up role.  Why change a good thing?
Worst - Lester -  I know he's had a solid year but is he being mentioned in Cy Young talk?  He is ready to take the next step and be the best pitcher in the league.  It hasn't happened yet.

#8   Best - Catching tandem works.  I'm happy Tek is contributing and gets to leave on a more positive note when he's ready.  While I'm not ready to hand the keys of the kingdom to Salty yet, he has had a good year and continues to progress.
Worst - Youk.  Face it this is not a great year for him.  He's our only power RH hitter and hitting in the 4 hole his numbers should be much better.  Beltre's power numbers are better and how much less time has he played?  I still love Youk's heart and am thankful he's not Gayrod.

#7.  Best - Aceves -  The best of Theo's bargain basement finds in years.  Just give him the ball - no prescribed role needed.
Worst - Lowrie -  He teases us, but he can't stay healthy- not reliable as a starter or a sub.  Give me gritty Scutaro any day of the week.

#6.   Best -  Big Papi - More power, more production, more smiles and hugs - steroids my buttocks.  Sign him up; let him retire as a Red Sox.
Worst - Jenks -  Closer of the future - what a joke.  Ozzie's not an idiot.  the only thing he helped this year was himself to 2nds and 3rds at the buffet line.

#5. Best - AGon - great trade; great defense; great person; great numbers - an MVP candidate.  Just waiting for that signature moment from him.  It will come.
Worst - Lackey -  In all the years he pitched for the Halos, I never saw him get hit like he has the last two years.  What the heck happened?

#4.  Best - Pedey - The laser show is healthy- another great year.  My favorite ball player to watch.  Another victory for the little guys.
Worst - Drew - In the past he never lived up to expectations, but he did contribute. Another one contributing nothing; talk about a bad exit.  Maybe September will be redemption.  Maybe my portfolio will improve.

#3.  Best - Paps -  I loved his energy, his enthusiasm.  I loved when he was dominant and automatic.  Well he returned to that form after being Papelbum, especially last year.  He deserves to be well paid and a closer for the Sox for years to come.
Worst - Crawford -  A big signing - big expectations.  He has had his worst statistical year.  His numbers are way down in every category.  Hopefully things get better next year; at least he's not Chone Figgins.

#2.  Best - Beckett -  Even with all of the injuries last year, Beckett was one of the main reasons the Sox fell out of contention; he was terrible.  He has righted the ship. They needed him and he's produced.  Live with the slow pace; he's our ace and just might be able to outduel Verlander, Wilson, Weaver, or CC.
Worst - No lefty relief -  Hill might have worked.  They should have had more options.  A glaring need - a glaring hole.  Get your valium ready if Morales is in with the game on the line in the playoffs.

#1.  Best - Els - What a return!  Catalyst, basestealer, powerhitter, producer in the clutch, gazelle in CF.  MVP!
Worst - Buchholz's injury.  Don't forget how great he was last year. A healthy Buch would have elevated this team to another level.  What a shame.

Nit-picking, but I'd make the absence of Buchholz and Matsuzaka from the rotation the No. 1 worst. Overall, though, I think you nailed it.

Yes, many liked to pile on Dice-K but he's been a big loss, and of course with Buch I think we'd have a comfortable lead in the division.  Youk's had a sub-par year with a lot of injuries, but he shouldn't be batting 4th anyway.  Still like having a veteran like Drew around for playoffs.

Re: The 10 best and Worst for the Sox this year. My rankings- adjust at will.

    Overall, not bad.

My biggest disagreement is putting Lester in a worst category just because he isn't pitching like Pedro. The guy is 14-6 with a 3.05 ERA. Barring a collapse in his last four or five starts, he'll likely win about 17 games and have an ERA around 3.00, maybe lower and it shouldn't be too much higher. I can't complain about that.

I also think fans are too hard on Morales. He's not completely lights out but he's been better than he's given credit for.

Putting Youk in the worst list is understandable but not because his numbers. Youk's problems isn't his numbers, although his average is down a bit. His problem is that every year, he ends up on the D.L. W/O the stint on the DL, he might have hit around 25 HRs and gone over 100 RBIs. That's fine for a cleanup hitter. As it is, he'll likely end up with around 22 or 23 HRs with RBIs in the 90s, unless he goes lights out in September. As for his batting average, he's one hot streak from finishing around .280-plus, which will be fine if he can reach that. So with a strong September, he could finish the season with 23 HR, 95 RBIs and .280 BA. That's great production for the number of games he'll end up playing, but for the third year in a row, he'll play less than 140 games and he has never played 150 games in a full season.

Re: The 10 best and Worst for the Sox this year. My rankings- adjust at will.

Overall good list...Keys to a strong post season run...

Youk has been a tale of two seasons...OPS before the AS game .911 OPS right in line with his career average...since 659. Injuries have to factored but his second half has been pretty bad, time to drop him down in the lineup. the key fro him is to finish strong...if he returns to form our lineup will all the more potent...

The loss of Buccholz and Matsuska have been huge, but we've still managed to stay in the hunt and are on pace to win 100 games...if we get buccholz back even if it's just in the pen it'll help to bolster our staff...

Jon Lester still has time to show the he's a big game pitcher by pitching big in the post season!

Carl Crawfod's year has been the most disapointing of all though he has hit a tad better in the second half...740 OPS after posting a woeful 659 in the first half...He too can erase the memory by finishing strong and being the catalyst we thoguht we were getting...the first in MLB histry to record 100 triples, 100 homers and 400 SB before turning 30...that's the guy we signed...

Lackey...has been about as good as a journyman veteren #5 since jioning the Sox and I'd have to say the best we can hope for is for him to keep us in games and be our #4 come postseason...thereafter...I wonder if we could somehow find a trading partner with a bad cotract that'd be interested in making a move...other wise we all just have to accept that we got a guy that's never gonna be what we thought we were getting and simply marvel at his gamesmanship...cause if nothing the guy does gives us innings...

Enter Eric Bedard...who is clearly our best #3 option...this might well prove to be the best aquisition not named Aceves that Epstien pulled off the this year to help bolster our staff...6 IP 4 runs of less and we're in the game...

Aceves...need I say more the teams MVP...We will need him to be the bridge to the end game his lefty right splits are about even and he has the guts of a burglar...

    Morales/Miller/Doubront....

One of the has to be the guy to get out tough lefties and pitch in high leverage situations....

    Keep on keeping on...

Beckett...we know if he arrives in the post season healthy he'll step up does he have another 2007 run in him?

Bard & Papelbon....bring the heat meat!

We don't need a left specialist: look at how well our righties get lefties out. They are better than most "specialists" and we dont have to yank them after one AB.

I never call some one gay as an insult but that was hardly a slur and people have said much worse and not been reported. I don't who is more juvenile you or him.

Youk and Lester disappointments?  Completely disagree.  Lester has struggled with control, which has kept him from going deep into games, but he has battled.  Youk is not having a great season, but is having a good one despite the injury.

Beckett has had a very good season this year, but he isn't on anybody's Cy Young radar either, but you put him at second best on the good things list.  And lately he has struggled.

Re: The 10 best and Worst for the Sox this year. My rankings- adjust at will.

THE MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENTS FOR ME THIS YEAR ARE THE
    FOLLOWING:
    1. LACKEY..THIS GUY HAS A RAG ARM AND IS IN DECLINE. A
TERRIBLE SIGNING. THEO SHOULD BE FIRED FOR THIS.
    2. YOUKILIS...WAY, WAY UNDERPRODUCTIVE. HE GOES UP
TO THE DISH LOOKING FOR THE BB. UMPS HAVE WISED
UP TO HIM. WILL FINISH THE SEASON AT .250. NOT A
#4 HITTER BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION.
    3. CRAWFORD...$100 MILLION PLUS FOR A .250 HITTER.
    ANOTHER TERRIBLE SIGNING.
    4. LESTER... A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT. NIBBLES AT THE
EDGES AND WEARS HIS ARM OUT BY THE 5TH OR 6TH
    INNING.
    5. WAKEFIELD....6 OR 7 STRAIGHT LOSSES. HE PUTS THE
TEAM DOWN EARLY AND THEY DON'T RECOVER. TOO
MANY PASSED BALLS AND WPS. THE GUY IS WASHED
UP. FORGET THE "HE GIVES US INNINGS" MYTH.
A START BY WAKE, AT THIS POINT, IS A PROBABLE LOSS.
THIS IS WHY WE WILL FINISH 8 BEHIND THE YANKS. EPSTEIN
HAS DONE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO STRENGTHEN THIS TEAM.
THE YANKS HAVE YOUNGSTERS LIKE ROBERTSON,WADE, NUNEZ
GARDNER; AND HAVE JOBA, ROBERTSON, MONTERO AND
NOESI IN THE WINGS. WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY ZILCH.
WHERE ARE OUR FARM STANDOUTS ??? WHO IS MAJOR LEAGUE
READY ?? THE YANKS HAVE BETTER COACHING AND A BETTER
SYSTEM. AS A SOX FAN, I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE
    DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG TALENT.
WE ARE GETTING WAXED TODAY BY THE RANGERS. OUR
OFFENSE STINKS AND OUR PITCHING IS NON EXISTENT.
AFTER BECKETT, THIS STAFF IS A VAST WASTELAND.
GET REAL FANS...LET EPSTEIN GO TO CHICAGO. WE NEED A
NEW GM...AND IF CASHMAN OPTS OUT OF NY...WE SHOULD
GIVE HIM A CALL. ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN LOSER EPSTEIN
WHO GAVE US LACKEY, CRAWFORD AS WELL AS KEEPING
ON WAKE AND TEK FOR ANOTHER YEAR.

Re: The 10 best and Worst for the Sox this year. My rankings- adjust at will.

HERE'S A THOUGHT !! YANKS STEAL GRANDERSON FOR JACKSON
AND KOCH. WE "STEAL " LACKEY FROM THE ANGELS.
HATS OFF TO THEO ON THAT ONE. CASHMAN SURE SHOWED
UP THEO ON THAT ONE. IN MY OPINION, THE SOX NEED A
BIG BANGER IN LINEUP WHO CAN HIT 40+ DINGERS A YR.
IT AIN'T GONNA BE AGON OR PAPI. THE YANKS HAVE TWO
GUYS WHO WILL HIT 40 AND TWO OR THREE MORE WHO WILL
HIT ABOUT 30. (CANO AND SWISHER). THE SOX JUST CANNOT
MATCH UP IN THE POWER DEPT. THE YANKS COME UP WITH
A REJUVENATED COLON, WHO STUNK FOR US, A REJUVENATED
GARCIA, A GREAT NEW TALENT NOVA, AND CC. ONCE BUCHHOLZ
WENT DOWN....OUR SEASON DID TOO. YES..WE WILL PROBABLY
MAKE THE POST SEASON...BUT DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP.
