The Mega Trade. Who got the better end the deal !!

My brief answer to the sports writers who won't let go of old news. Who cares. The trade is long over by a full year with both clubs getiing what they wanted. Move on to another subject.

The Dodgers certainly have a high payroll but it doesn't seem to bother them.  As long as they are willing to spend money they should be a very competitive team for many years.

The Sox did, beyond a doubt.  However, it was still the right deal for the Dodgers because the new owners needed to show their fans they were willing to spend to get good players.  AGon, in my mind, was the cornerstone and by himself would be well worth the $20M/year for several years.  However, to get him the Dodgers had to take on Beckett, who has not looked good, and CC, who is absolutely not worth $20M/year for four years or however long his contract is.  The Dodgers are tearing up the league right now primarily because of AGon, the rotation without Beckett, the bullpen, and the rest of the lineup.  From that perspective it is a win-win, but in reality the Sox made out like bandits.

One way to look at it might be to estimate what CC and Beckett are worth and then add the difference to AGon's deal. Of course this doesn't even touch the value of Webster and DLR.

    CC cost $20+M/yr/ worth $12M/yr

Beckett cost $17M/yr/ worth $10M/yr (not counting injury)

Add $15M/yr to AGon's deal. Is he worth $35+M a year?

Is he worth giving up Webster and DLR to pay him $35M a year to play?

if this were a fight, it would TKO for Boston....AGon and CC COMBINED have barely hit for 20 homers...and when you look at the bench and see Beckett wearing Dodger blue, you have addition by subtraction...LAD can claim it worked out well for them all they want but stats dont lie...

    As always - 100% correct!

    August 23rd, 2012..........

Magic Johnson----"We need to spend a quarter billion on something Stan to bring some excitement to this team. How bout we trade for Alex Rodriguez?"

Stan Kasten----"Not a bad idea, but lets try calling the Red Sox first before we pull the trigger on that. They have a lot of big name players."

    June 2nd, 2013..........

Stan----"We are 23-32 and in last place and need a spark. What do we do Magic?"

Magic----"I say we double down and spend another quarter billion. Pujols or Hamilton for some prospects?"

Stan----"How bout we just fire Donnie Baseball."

Magic----"The last time I fired a coach it got me some bad publicity. Lets bring up the Cuban kid. He is fun at least."

    August 23rd, 2013........

Magic----"Great trade we made with Boston, huh Stan?"

    Stan----"You bet Magic."

Magic----"Still think we should trade for Hamilton."

Stan----"I think we should wait till the off season, then sign Jacoby Ellsbury for a 10 year 250 million dollar deal. If not, then Hamilton it is. Only so many spots in the OF."

Magic----" Great idea Stan. You always were the patient one."

    November 1st 2015..........

Magic----"First, congradulations to the Boston Red Sox for winning another championship. With that said, I would like to announce the sale of the Los Angelos Dodgers to Mr. Mark Cuban for 100 dollars and the acceptance of all our liabilities. Hopefully Mr. Cuban can bring a winner back to L.A. and take the Dodgers out of debt."

um. how is this even a question. the red sox won this trade. you can say the dodgers are looking good right now, and that is true, but keep in mind with pretty much any long term big dollar contract, it starts okay, and ends poorly, or horrifically, or catastrophically. The dodgers got three of those deals. Conversely, acquiring prospects typically does nothing in the immediate, and pays dividends in the future. The fact that as of right now, things are even, means that this is like pitting johnnie walker red against johnnie walker blue. Blue wins. The red sox won this trade in a landslide.

CC and A-gon are also under contract for a long time. A-gon in particular has HoF talent IMO. He could win 3 MVPs over that period you never know.

Of course what you fail to mention is that gonzo has 17 of those homeruns and will easily have over 100 rbi.

Well, the reason Dodgers are doing well is their pitching and the entire offense.   Right now the hottest hitter for the Dodgers team is Puig and Hanely Ramirez.  Without their bat, dont think the Dodgers will be as good as they are today.

Red Sox didnt get a better players in return.  They just saved a whole alot of money where they were able to bring in so many guys from Victorino to Napoli to Peavy to Thorton to Carp to Dempster.   That is why the Red Sox are a much deeper team where Farrell have so much flexibility to change the line up from one game to another until he feel confidence.

Dodgers may got better players in return, but the Red Sox got better financing!!

So we are talking two different things between two clubs

Who got the better of it.  Bottom line is, 'You gotta put arses in the seats.'  And in that concext, LA needed big time, recognizable 'star-power' to rejuvenate their fan base.  And just look at their attendance figures and area TV ratings to see how this trade has worked out for them.  Not to mention their on-the-field performance and 1st place standing.

On the other side of the coin, the Sox needed access to the $$$$ made available through dumping of Agon, Beckett, Crawford, and Punto to acquire the likes of Koji, Victorino, Napoli, Drew, Gomes, Tazawa, and Carp to rejuvenate their clubhouse and more importantly, the fan base.  Can you just imagine what would have happened had this trade not been made and the Sox had gone into this season with Beckett, Agon, and Crawford and the rest of the 2012 cast still on the team and no Victorino, Napoli, Gomes, Drew, or Koji.  Attendance at Fenway and TV ratings would have plummeted to the level last seen in the mid-1960's.  Not to mention the probability of the team being mired in last place competing with the Astros for worst team in baseball.

In medical parlance, the patient was on the table starting to turn purple when a heart transplant donor became available, and within hours Dr. Ben did the procedure that not only restored life to the patient but allowed said patient within a year's time to regain the vigor and exuberance that brings hope to an entire nation, Red Sox Nation.

So who got the better of the deal, you say.  WE DID, FOOL.  You, me, and the thousands of other Sox fans who fill Fenway for every game, and who show up in vast numbers at all the ballparks around the country where the Sox play away games, in addition to the better part of all the homes in New England that watch the Sox play from their living room couches.

So let the scribes vacillate and debate, but in my heart I know who got the better of THE DEAL. We did.

We didnt win any trade, we dumped salary, that it. The players we received have minimal impact on our team.
