    I think the players take every team seriously.  When it comes down to September, the win/loss column is all that matters..and if you racked up losses because you didnt take another team seriously, you are screwed by the numbers - not necessarily the team.

    In my opinion... the Red Sox are still young and exciting,
    and unfortunately the Yanks fans can't say the same thing
    about their team.

    If Mariano has a serious arm injury mid-season and retires, then I will write the Yankees off.  Not until then.

    Being in the same division breeds some degree of familiarity especially considering the length of Mariano's career, very few closers have enjoyed the same longevity that Mo has.

    Most burn out in just a few years.

    Of all the teams that Mariano has faced over his career in the ALE no doubt the Red Sox have been the best offensively within the same division, not to mention the play-off games they faced each other.

    So considering the circumstances it's easy to understand besides that now he's 42 years old..

    But there was a period when he first came up his stuff was so electric that no one, no team could touch him.

    What he is doing now has never been done before.

    reach the playoffs... They can't compete with Detroit,
    Texas, Angels, Tampa, Boston, Toronto, Red Sox, etc.
