    Very interesting news.

One big difference between the Cubs and Sox, of course, is that we easily have the money to be able to pay a Jon Lester.

Next few weeks will tell if we're going to compete for the division.  If not, he could get traded.

Sounds like the A's are going for it. They have been feeling the Angels breathing down their necks lately. As for the Sox easily having the money to pay for Lester; we ( we being John Henry) easily have the money to field an All Star team. But are " we " willing to spend it?  Anyway, as a Red Sox and Notre Dame fan, I am glad that Samardzija is not going to New York.

First off all the Cubs did was dump salary! Lester is in a different class of ballplayer than either Samardzija or Hammel. Neither of these guys are top tier pitchers where as Lester is an elite top of the rotation pitcher, his cost would be way more expensive.

The point is that we need to recognize real quick, if we are going to meet Lester's bottom price or not.

If we lose Lester this off season and get nothing but a comp draft pick in the 30's, then we lose. I want Lester back and agree he is "elite". We do have the money to extend him, but if we think we can spend that money better elsewhere, we better guess right, and we better get at least what the Cubs got in return for Samardzija.

The Cubs are going nowhere as RigatoniT said above.  They handed Boy Bunder an $18M 5-year deal to rebuild them, and he's got 2 years left.  The Astros will be playoff contenders before the Cubs will.

Ricketts is taking the "TheoCubs" approach, empowering Theo to do whatever he wants.  It's not that Ricketts is unwilling to spend; he just trusts "TheoCubs" too much.  TheoCubs worships Billy Beane.  Fine, it took Beane - what - 11 years to get the A's back to where they arrived last year?

Ironically, TheoCubs deals with Beane on this trade.  He's building via the prospects route.  OK.  This ain't Oakland; it's a HUGE fan base fed up with the losing, and a team bleeding money at the gate.

At least TheoCubs is poaching from a good farm system - I'll give him that.

Agree completely. Sorry we could not have made this type of deal with the A's / + another team. They are definitely in a "win now" mode, and given the way we're playing, I hope Billy gets that ring he's waited so long for.

Imagine Billy Beane in Boston with Money to spend and prospects to work with--Holy Bolognia."

There would be some slicing and dicing. The A's might have just made one deal that will lead to another.

Keep Hamels and Sam…to go along with their other two starters. SOLID Staff.

Trade one of the obtained starters for prospects to move to someone else for a better player.

If CC's season is over would the Yanks, Dodgers, etc. take one starter off BB's hands for some one year away prospects.

Good lesson BenC. don't wait too long --make your best offer to Lester--answer "NO"-gonzo--like AGonzo.  Do your homework--the trading game has wratched up don't be left behind. The big boys are playing--read the board--the fans will support a trade of Lester for two really solid players. One could be a solid OF from the Dodgers/ Angels. You have nothing that's closer than two years away. We have plenty of pitchers to support a Lester trade.

I wouldn't trust Beane with a large payroll. Large payrolls ruin small market GMs. Also the fact that he said he really doesn't care about winning in the playoffs is disheartening if you a fan of the team.

Yes, but if Theo keeps trading away his pitchers, then when Bryant, Baez, Alcantara are ready (2014-2015), he won't have any pitchers to support the great lineup he will have.

hope BC's taking notes. Theo just got him 2 A-list prospects in the A's system including a stud pitcher who won 10 games last year and a ready for primetime stud shortstop! plus they save $120m or so for other positions rather than for one pitcher. they have a few developing pitchers ala the sox! lester has an even more proven track record. we can get atleast the same, perhaps for a power hitting A-rated stud (team trading for him gets his A-rated compensation pick if they cant extend him) and another A-rated 3rd baseman/ss type (for us taking the risk in the first place) with a single A longshot type for us to develop. remember the stuff we give up for the Gag-ne? this should b even better for our side this time! Well, it may be a good news for Boston.  Not only because of Lester. Yankees found out that Sabathia may be out of the season as well he may threatening his career.  Now Boston could use CC Sabathia an example why Boston shouldnt sign Lester for more than 5 years.  Also the Yankees may not even dare to try to give Lester more than 5 years deal during this coming off season cuz they already have problem with their own players. Also A-Rod is coming back next year where his contract is back on payroll.

Well, I do not know why Lester keep rejecting these contract extensions.  He seem to be acting jealous about how much money that Ellsbury got from the Yankees.  I am sure that Boston will not trade him, and will try to make their last chance on resigning him during off season cuz Lester have proven that he will have another three to four more good years.

Cashman is known to throw bad money around after bad money.  His rationale will be "we needed to replace CC".  His history of contracts get worse over time too.  The ARod contract may not be his worse one.  And look at Tanaka - that's a disaster waiting to happen given the OPT OUT CLAUSE Cashman gave him.

I'm sure Jon sat down with his wife and, based on their budget, realized there's no way they can survive in high-priced Boston with anything less than 125 million. What with the price of gas and beer and Shirley Temples and keeping up the house and still having anything left over to give the kids when they die. I've tried living on 125 million, and I barely skated by. Have you seen what they're getting for 90% hamburger these days?
