Paps has very much irritated me in the last few years, but maybe he has gained some maturity... -

His price goes up every day especially when you contrast Bard's recent outings and Pap's. It appears his "poker playing" contract negotiating tactics will be very successful! -

math seems pretty simple. 2 years $30 mil. 3rd year option. Compared to Krod and Soriano boh Sox and Pap s/b pretty happy -

Hey Dannycater, did you know that "The Stepford Wives" is now on Netflix and is streamed. Why don't you go watch it again. They also have seven years of MacGiver episodes. -

Dont know whats wrong with the kid lately..hes got a great slider and has worked in a change, so hes got 3 pitches. Just a rough spot. he's still young, only 25, I think he'll be fine.. But if not, looks like Paps could be a very wealthy man to stay in Boston.. -

what's interesting here is that bard can bring it at 98-99mph and it is hittable. the problem is his location. it needs to be on the edge or slightly off the edge of the strikezone.
whereas pap throw 95-96 and his FB not only has some movement on it but seems to explode when it gets to the plate.
danny bards gonna be just fine. I'm not worried about him at all. need some simple adjustment with his location is all. -

Everytime Bard blows one Paps gives him 20K, because everytime Bard blows one Paps grip around the FO balls gets a little tighter.
Realistically, what kind of contract do we think Paps would be looking for, operating under the assumption he continues to pitch this way through the season? I think he is going to want more than 2 guaranteed years and will find it elsewhere. 3/40? -

As Pap learned, you can't just throw heat and survive in the majors. You also need to have another "out" pitch or two you can feel comfortable throwing with a good degree of success. -

good point farmfan, no close can get by with one pitch. Especially if they want to last a long time as a premier closer. -

spongB, unfortunately Theo may have made some very bad moves by signing Dice, Lackey, Jenks and Wheeler. If Bard falls apart we may have a rough season without changes.
You never can tell how things will work out and Theo has had his share of good and bad signings like most GM's -

First let me say Bard will be OK and a very good RP and maybe a closer at some time.
However I do hope people that thought getting rid of Paps this past off season and into ST will finally realize you do not dump a guy because of 6 BS last year and you do not like his immaturity. Then just give the closer roll to an unproven "closer/8th inning" guy who had just as many BS last year in only 10 chances.
The conversations surrounding exchanging Bard for Paps as the closer were some of the dumbest ever on this forum.
The Barders completely disregarded his stats in closing but were over blowing the same fact on Paps never mind his history of 30/35+ saves every year.
I do hope this closes the book on it for at least the rest of the year. -

What people sometimes forget is that projections are just that and there is a journey to get that result and the journey often does not match the projection.
There were lots of reasons to look Bard and Papelbon and determine that once Papelbon was FA Bard could be capable of assuming the closer role. It had the look of Riveria coming up behind Wetteland or K-Rod coming up behind Percival.
Still could happen but never was and isn't a lock. Everybody sooner or later goes through a stretch where they struggle. -

Ive said this since the beginning of the season Bard is not ready, his offspeed stuff is not closer ready. He still has great velocity, but it doesnt move, you need to have movement on your fastball if you want to be a dominant closer.
Papelbon has looked like a guy fighting to prove people wrong and to be honest he is the best closer on the FA market this winter. I would lock him up by August if I was Theo. 4 years 44-48 million might get it done.
Look at the RP the Sox have, no one (Jenks included) cannot work the 8th inning if Bard is to close next season. Id like to see Papelbon back and the BP would look like this.
Papelbon-closer
Bard-8th
Jenks
Acevas
Bowden
Dubront
Add another FA reliever who can get lefties out and that is a young hard throwing BP, one that should be around for years to come. -

Bard has been a joke and cost us plenty of games already. Actually, the entire bullpen has pretty much stunk again this year (Jenks, Wheeler, Bard). -

Bard A joke??? IMHO this comment is a joke.
24.2 innings
11 runs (4 in one first of the year and one with 2 runs)
24 Apps and 17 with No runs scored
He has had 9 H, 1 BS, 1 BL (won game), 3 L
He and Paps have been pretty damn good thank God.
You do realize a BP is a crap shoot every year.
Wheeler was expected to be better based upon the last 3 yrs in Tampa.
Jenks the same.
