We had smooth sailing, but now the ship is starting to take on a little water. An infusion of youth might help.  To say that a bad west coast trip is meaningless is nonsensical. Of course it means something. And that Chicken Little stuff should have been retired after September 2011. When the ship starts taking on water, you need to act .

They need to act because injuries are starting to add up.

Not because they had a tough road trip and "the ship is sinking" nonsense.

I did not say that the ship was sinking. I said it was taking on a little water. It won't sink unless that continues.  Every win and every loss means something.  We have seen in the past how easily things go sour.  It is not "Chicken Little " to recognize this and want to plug the leaks.

For what it's worth, in 2007 the Red Sox went 4-9 on the road against the Angels, Athletics and Mariners enroute to a World Series title.

The 2007 Red Sox led the AL in ERA and the bullpen was by far the best in the league. This version of the team is now SIXTH in ERA and the bullpen is now THIRTEENTH of the 15 AL teams. And its sinking fast. Unless help arrives to bolster the pen a free fall in the standings is a distinct possiblity-not because of a poor west coast trip but because the bullpen as currently constructed stinks.

They need to act because the BULLPEN stinks. Miller's injury didn't help, but it stunk even before that. The ship IS taking on water. A patch or two is needed and, if properly applied, should right the course.

Agree.  Bullpen help is definitely needed.  At least it is nice to hear Henry say that he is willing to spend money to improve this team.  They need at least one or even two additional pitchers.  Miller is out for the remainder of the season.  Not sure who they will acquire but they need to sign someone soon.

I don't think its a matter of money right now Susan. Relief pitchers are going to cost us prospects. As someone else here stated, we are not going to be able to protect all the prospects we already have, so some are expendable. Its a fine line to walk, deciding which guys can be traded to salvage this year. What is clear to me is that if we do not get any excellent bullpen help there is a good chance we will go into free fall late in the summer-but if we can get that help the rest of the team is solid.

No it won't. The Sox already know they need bullpen help. The road trip will tell nothing about whether or not they'll need to get somebody for 3B. That will be determined by what Middlebrooks does in Pawtucket. The Sox are unlikey to get a starter unless somebody gets hurt in the next month, so unless that injury happens in the next 10 games, those 10 games will have no bearing on a decision. And if everybody keeps pitching like they have and Buchholz comes back strong, I don't see them going out and getting a starter.

So all the next 10 games really mean is a chance to go on the road and keep trying to pad the lead. If it turns out to be a 2-8 trip, that still won't mean anything. How they respond to a bad road trip will mean more.

ROY19err .........  Don't look now, Sox are falling off of the left coast !!!!

The results on this trip are the manifestation of our poor bullpen. We should be no worse than 2-2, which is fine for this kind of trip. However, unless the holes in the pen are plugged we will fall off ANY coast or anywhere in the middle as well.

I can remember a time when the Sox were in need of BP help to get them into the playoffs so they went out and traded this kid..... what was his name again?.... errrr... Bagwell.  They traded this Bagwell kid for a reliever named Larry Anderson, who DID help get them into the playoffs - but that's all.  No gold ring.  Within a couple of years Larry Anderson was gone, but IIRC Bagewell went on to have a pretty decent career.  It's too bad it didn't happen in Boston.  Bagwell could probably have helped the team some during his pretty good career.

There's an old saying about being up to ones "waist" in alligators and how hard it is to then remember that your goal was to drain the swamp.  Right now the gators are circling but we shouldn't lose sight of our goal.

This team entered this season with relatively mediocre expectations but a plan for the future centering around prospects.  I'm not saying we shouldn't make some trades someplace to get a couple of BP arms if necessary.  What I AM saying is that we should be careful who we're trading away.  Let's not be giving away another Jeff Bagwell for another arm or two.

IMO this team is within a year or two of being exactly where they want to be - with the farm system well stocked and a core group of veterans to build around.  IMO we shouldn't be mortgaging our future just because we want to make the playoffs this year.

Having the right to do something doesn't make it the right thing to do.

What the Sox really need is for Bailey to return to form.

That would strengthen the back end of the bullpen.

They could fill the need of a LH RP with someone like Britton.

Well said.  No one thought this year would amount to much so we should be happy with how things are going.  You are right in saying we shouldn't give away the future for a shot at the post season now.  After the last couple of years I think the fans are hungry for some post season sucess but we should look at the big picture.

Injuries have hurt this year so some extra arms could help but the sox should keep a long term view on where this team is going.

my goodness people.  really?  the red sox have notoriously spit the bit on left coast trips.  even in championship years they get abused out there.  to even entertain the notion of a 7-3 west coast swing is wearing red sox colored glasses.

things like blowing 4 run leads in the 9th happen 3 hours behind.  just the way it is.

i would be ecstatic for the sox to play .500 on west ccoast trips.  that is being optimistic but it is what i shoot for everytime.
