The controversy began early in the World Series, as in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1. Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter flipped this ground ball to Pete Kozma at second base to force out Dustin Pedroia. The ball never entered Kozma's glove, but the umpire originally ruled Pedroia out. John Farrell came out to argue, and the umpires got together to discuss the ruling and it was overturned as all other five umpires said Kozma never caught the ball.

The Red Sox burst out of the gate early in Game 1, as Mike Napoli slammed a three-run double to left field that put Boston up, 3-0. The Red Sox got to Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright early, scoring five runs in the first two innings, taking advantage of two rare St. Louis errors.

On a ball that surely looked like a grand slam for David Ortiz, Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran made a sensational catch, slamming into the bullpen wall. David Ross was able to score on the play to put the Red Sox up, 5-0. Beltran would have to leave the game in the next inning with a rib injury. The Red Sox took Game 1 by a score of 8-1.

Ninety minutes before the start of Game 4, Jonny Gomes got the word that John Farrell had scratched Shane Victorino from the Red Sox lineup and Gomes would be playing left field. In the sixth inning, with the game tied, 1-1, Gomes stepped up with two outs and two on and got his first hit of the World Series: a three-run home run to left that gave the Red Sox a 4-2 win and tied a series that so far had been all about pitching and scratching out just enough runs to win.

After Matt Carpenter popped out for the second out in the ninth inning of Game 4, Carlos Beltran stepped into the batter's box with a runner on and the Cardinals down, 4-2. Sox closer Koji Uehara fired to first baseman Mike Napoli, who tagged out pinch runner Kolten Wong to end the game.

Cardinals rookie Kolten Wong slams his helmet to the ground after being picked off to end Game 4. Wong got caught in midstep by Uehara, and Mike Napoli's tag was too quick for Wong to get back to the bag. It was the first time in postseason history that a game ended on a pickoff. The Red Sox’ win pulled them into a 2-2 tie with the Cardinals.

With Game 5 tied in the seventh inning, David Ross stepped up with two on and one out and ripped a double that just stayed fair down the left-field line and hopped into the stands, scoring Xander Bogaerts from second base for what would be the game-winning run. The Red Sox won, 3-1, to send the series back to Boston with them needing just one more win for the world championship.

With Game 6 scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, the Red Sox loaded the bases against Cardinals rookie sensation Michael Wacha. Shane Victorino, who missed the previous two games because of a bad back, hit a high fly ball off the Green Monster that easily scored Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz. Jonny Gomes came chugging along behind them hoping to get the third run across and slid home to just beat Yadier Molina's tag. Jim Joyce's "safe" call was emulated by Ellsbury, Ortiz, and Xander Bogaerts.

Shane Victorino pumps his fists after doubling home three runs to put the Red Sox up, 3-0, in the bottom of the third inning of Game 6. He was able to advance to third on the throw home and immediately began celebrating. Victorino had missed the previous two games because of a back injury and had been struggling in the series.

The normally stoic Stephen Drew gets caught up in the congratulations after his first-pitch home run in the fourth inning of Game 6 put the Red Sox up, 4-0. Boston would score two more runs in the inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead, looking to shut the door on the Cardinals and clinch the World Series.

John Lackey, who embodied the Red Sox’ incredible single-season turnaround, got the ball for Game 6 and was lights out, allowing just one run in 6.2 innings. In just one season, Lackey went from one of the most detested players in Boston to the most unlikely fan favorite.

With the Red Sox up, 6-1, going into the ninth, John Farrell went with the pitcher who had gotten the team through so many tough tests the entire season: Koji Uehara. The closer got two quick fly outs and then struck out Matt Carpenter to clinch the World Series and send Fenway Park into a frenzy. The 38-year-old Uehara became perhaps the most automatic pitcher in baseball after taking over the closer's role in June

The Red Sox gather on the field to celebrate winning the 2013 World Series. It was the eighth World Series victory for the franchise and the third in 10 years. Game 6 also marked the first time the Red Sox had clinched a Series at home in 95 years, with the last coming in 1918.
