Triple Crown Candidates
posted at 4/30/2011 7:54 PM EDT
The last triple crown winner in MLB was Yaz in 1967. At that point in baseball history, the longest period between triple crown winners was 14 years (1887-1901) Now it is 43 years. Does anyone think it will happen again anytime soon and what players have the best chance to do it? Or is it possible that this will never happen again? -

Great post jesseyeric! Yes, I think it could happen again. The following 2 players I feel have the best chance to accomplish this feat in the next few years are:
ADRIAN GONZALEZ
ROBINSON CANO -

Cabrera (Tigers) is a triple threat.
Pujols (Cardinals) is another. -

Good names but this is why I don't think it will happen anytime soon.
Gonzalez certainly will put the ball into the seats, but he has only hit over .300 once in his career.
Cano can lead the league in hitting, but he is pretty much a line drive hitter and I don't think he can get to the 45 HR plateau.
As good a hitter as Cabrera is, I think he has too much spinning in his head and pressure would be his downfall.
Pujols is the one I think has the best chance.
But there are some other good candidates out there:
Longoria might mature into a dynamic hitter and really raise his career numbers as he gets older. -

I also think place in the hitting line-up can play a big part in this. Another reason I don't like Cano doing it is he hits 5th in the line-up with two big RBI guys in front of him. -

What about Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays? -

Posted by jesseyericIn a word, No. He's never hit over .260 in a MLB season before, although BABIP suggests that he was slightly unlucky last year, while setting a career high of .260. If AGon can be discounted due to average, then Bautista can certainly be discounted as well. -

i predict no one will win the triple crown anytime soon. the main reason is rbi's.
homeruns and batting average are under the control of the hitter.
runners on base, the hitter has no control over that. -

Though I agree with the others who said it's not likely to happen anytime soon, those two guys do spring to mind as the most likely candidates.Manny Ramirez in his prime would have been another; he led the league in BA, HR, and RBI in three different seasons, after all. -

You got it right, jessey. it won't happen anytime soon, I think, and certainly not with the crowd of ballplayers out there now.
You do need, as Flapjack seems to suggest, someone along the order of a Manny. Without the juice, too.
Not happenin'. -

"Is Hanley Ramirez a possible candidate?"
Not this year... that's for sure...
2011: 1 HR, .200 BA, 11 RBI
My #1 pick in my fantasy league this year is killing me!! LOL. -

Softy - this thread was going just fine. No B.S, no hatred, just baseball conversation. This, to me, only proves that your whole point in being here is to disrupt. Glad I am not you and have to look at myself in the mirror. That must be depressing.

With some luck Pujols would already have won one. His 162-game averages are .330, 42 HR, 127 RBI. Luck is a major factor. -

Posted by harnessMore amazing is that our Babe never noticed that. After all Babe brings reality and objectivity to this forum. That is his prime directive. It is a shame that so many here now have Babe on ignore. How will the forum survive without someone whose pledge is to keep it real, honest, impartial, and objective. -

well seeing as he was talking about Babe ruth and not babe the poster this post would be a trolling post, and not a post on topic.
I'd have to think Pujols, but as another poster mentioned a lot of it is about luck. -

The average part is real hard to win with the power. Some more guys I'd go with (not now, maybe in a few years) are Carlos Gonzalez and maybe Cano. If Tulowitzki could every stay healthy he might be an outside possibility too...
