Tough break for V-Mart and the Tigers...lost for year with surgery.  Just shows how fragile great teams can be when injury bug hits.

On the Detroit baseball forums, the trolls are in unison blaming it on the conditioning staff and team doctors. The talk radio shows are even worse.

Conditioning? That wont happen to the Red Sox....but I do hope that the Sox training staff will address the dangers of getting dressed for gametime when under the influence to avoid those "ankle injuries" that befell our "ace" last year...

Tough break for Victor.  I wish him the best.  You never like to see any player go down with an injury like this, especially not the good guys.

A few beers by David Wells and he pitches a perfect game. Do you think that he had some fried chicken too?

[QUOTE]Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff January 17, 2012 03:28 PM What a major blow for the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers put out a statement that Victor Martinez suffered a torn ACL in his left knee while conditioning which could keep him out all of 2012. Martinez will be re-evaluated by Dr. Richard Stedman next week but "surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee is anticipated" according to the Tigers. If surgery is required as anticipated, Martinez will most likely be lost for the 2012 season. Martinez hit .330 (178x540) with 40 doubles, 12 home runs and 103 RBI in 145 games with the Tigers during the 2011 season.

So, would Detroit do a Johnny Peralta/Doug Fister for Youk and Lars?

Youk would give them a good, everyday 3B and Lars would allow them to use Cabrera more at the DH spot.  I would think right now would be a good time to sell high on Fister, as his stretch run with Detroit is the best he has ever thrown.  Regardless, he would be a very good back end guy in the Sox rotation.  Considering the fact that Fister makes beans, it would probably take a solid prospect along with Youk and Lars.

Detroit just took a major hit. Unlike Boston if Crawford gets hurt or Youk gets hurt we have about 4 more prolific hitters on the team - difference between gluttonose teams and the rest of the league.

Good guy, but it shows you the issue of signing older players.  He had knee issues with the RS.  It's hard to beleive that anyone advocated signing him for $52M/4.  It's hard to see them leave, but you simply have to throw farewell parties for anyone north of 30 looking for a long contract.

Martinez got hurt?  So clearly this was a BAD SIGNING, right?  And we should be thankful we don't have money tied up in him, which was obviously attributable to the incredible foresight of the GM at the time?  Right?

ok. The Red Sox have 5 players that could easily replace VMart's lost production ... the offense would not suffer.  The Tigers have zero players that can make up for VMarts lost numbers.  One team has a huge payroll to which they buy more than they need while the other ties up 3 big names and has to fill the rest of the team with lessor types.

They would not trade Fister. It has proven a necessity that to win the WS you need at least one very good starter to accompany your Ace. Verlander cannot single handedly win a WS for Detroit. No Fister, no WS for the Tigers.

THe guy people really underestiate on that team is Porcello.  Did everyone forget how young he STILL is?

He is one year older than Anthony Ranaudo.  Actually less than 1 year.

He is 9 months younger than Yankee pitching prospect Dellin Betances.

And he has 3 full seasons already under his belt!

That is right, and I did forget. Embarassed

Detroit has a chance to be a WSC but even with VMart they need another solid contributor -

Anyone here besides me wish we never did the VMart trade? and could have Justin Masterson and Nick Hagadone back. As good a hitter /class act as VMart was in Boston. Masterson would look awfully goood as our #4 w/ Bard looking at 5 spot, w/ Hagadone now fully recovered [TJ surgery] and pitching very well @ AAA poised to take a spot if someone went down. If we had won a WS w/ VMart I would say it was worth it [H.Rameriz] but in hindsight I wish we had those 2 young pitchers back.

By the way, where is softy and all the Theo bashers who swore that letting VMart go was a grave mistake?

Nothing against VMart. He's a great guy and a talented hitter, but a projected decline was the logical position. Imagine if we had VMart now at $55M and out for the year!
