Varitek Says He's Not Quite Dead Yet

I'm sure we all have adjusted to Saltyralphmacchio as the Sox regular catcher, but it sure was nice to see the old vet Tek rip 2 homers in a must-win at Philly. He needed them, the Sox needed them, and it's nice to get production off the bench so to speak. I led the End the Tek as regular rants a few years ago here, but I always have appreciated what this guy has done for Sox baseball for many years. In some respects, he's fallen below Wakefield in how fans perceive his professionalism and worth. Go Tek!

His worth was on display with Lester. Note: 2nd time in a row he catches Lester: Lester throws his 5th shutout (shutdown performance) with Tek since last year, when 67% of his 2010 outings with Tek were shutouts. Is Lester not in the same form as he has been all this year?

Tek was assigned to Miller right off the bat.
Tek caught Dice after he imploded.
    Tek was first assigned Aceves.
    Tek continues to catch Josh.
Tek gets Lester for the 2nd straight time and look what happens.

My my my - so many coincidences for a "back-up" catcher.

I think he's having a superb season.  Couldn't hit a lick in the early going but has really turned that around.

Jason has helped out more than I expected this season at the plate.  He also had a quick stretch like this last year before declining.  Hopefully he does well all season because every good AB our catchers give us will help our cause.

Re: Varitek Says He's Not Quite Dead Yet

You folks again miss the point on Tek's true value. It's not his bat.
Lester/Beckett are currently considered the two best pitchers on the active staff.

Beckett with Tek: 66-29 (NOT INCL PO's)
    Beckett w/o Tek: 11-14 ( NOT INCL PO's)

Lester with Tek this year:  2.25 ERA
Lester with Salty this year: 3.69 ERA

    Lester with VMART/SALTY 2010/2011: 3.69 ERA   23 HR allowed in 226 IP
    Lester w/ Tek 2010/2011:            2.02 ERA 2 HR allowed in 58 IP

I know that. I wasn't referring to you at all. But others are blinded by a couple of dingers. He's only a LT .250 hittter with some pop. I like how he works opposing pitchers. But his real value is in how he works with his own.

His OPS is up to .752 now. Not bad for a "back-up" catcher in MLB these days. Among the top 30 catchers in MLB by PAs (130 PAs +), VTek would be tied for 11th place with Salty at .752.

There may only be one better offensive back-up catcher in MLB (VMart).

Jason is doing his job this season for what we need him to do thats all that really counts.  Is he aging?  Yes, but compared to guys like Drew and Cameron he is making a huge effort to help our cause and teach Salty whatever he can.

Exactly craze4sox. He is doing a great job in his role this year. People keep expecting back-up catchers to put up MVP numbers or something.

Sox catching OPS in 2011: .752 and rising quickly.
Sox catching OPS in 2010: .793 for much more $$$.

We all age. The process involves different stages. What we lack in one area we make up for in others. When we care no longer able to compensate, we begin to "age out".

In regards to Tek, certain areas of contribution aren't prioritized well
on this board...and it isn't about his hitting.

I don't think too many "back-up catchers" start 33 games.
    It's clearly more a tandem.

I used the word "back-up" to emphasize VMzart's new role, not to label VTek.

    You are right:
    177 PAs for Salty
    134 PAs for Vtek

    Pretty close.

So true harness, so true; however, I love the fact that our catchers are doing so well on offense recently.

    Sox May OPS:
    Papi  1.080
    AGon  .989
    VTek   .933
    Youk   .862
    Ellsb   .827
    Craw  .810
    Salty  .756

    Sox June OPS:
    AGon   1.228
    Pedey  1.008
    Papi        .997
    Salty      .945
    Youk      .890
    Vtek       .800 (estimate after today)
    Ellsb      .785
    Scut      .773
    Craw     .761

Nice data, Moon. The team has a few holes, but I don't think it'll be costly to address them...and they will be addressed.

I think everyone's aware that Tek's contributions go beyond his numbers. That said, he is batting .310 with 15 RBI in his last 26 games. Given all the intangibles he brings, anything he hits over about .230 is gravy.

    And 90 PA's for VMART as catcher - .238 BA  .289 OBP  .576 OPS

So, if VMart ends up with 200 PAs, that makes him a 30% catcher/70% DH. A lot earlier than many here envisioned.

I assume these loonies think VMart would be hitting .329 had he been catching 70-80% of the games and everyone's ERA would be just as good as now.

If VMART'S splits hold realtively true the rest of the year, would you say it justifies his current worth?
