    We are so blessed to have Old Man Wakefield and his ERA of 5

    What am i missing? I hear how unbelieveably lucky we are to have this Old Codger go out there and get smacked all over the field and i know im missing something. Its like the Besatles, i know there must be somethnig to them but i think they're sh1te. Wakefield is appaling year after year. He can barely walk lets alone pitch and consistently has an ERA right around 5. So what am i missing?

    You aren't missing anything. Hopefully this year will be the end, so that they don't waste a roster spot on him anymore and they can move on. Let him sign elsewhere.

    Alas at some point (likely this off-season or worse in the middle of 2012) the Red Sox must part ways with Wakefield. We can only hope its during the off-season so that it does not turn into some PR and clubhouse debacle next season (should he be released mid-season).

    Same for Tek.

    At this point everyone needs to realize that both are here for the rest of the season, lets just hope they continue to be somewhat effective.

    Are you being serious?  Wakefield isn't that good. We all know that.  What you are missing is that he can fill in when people are hurt, eat up innings and win some games and he does that at a reasonable price.  A team isn't made up of 25 all stars.

       Wakefield had a nice little run, at least for him, but the more he pitches he has to revert to form which is a 5+ ERA, now is the time to send him back to the bull-pen.

    Miller, Aceves and Weiland have combined for a 6.08 ERA and a 1.800+ WHIP.

    Yes, we are "blessed" to have a 6th starter with a 4.80 ERA and a WHIP around 1.300.

    That is what you are "missing". We are about to be 8-4 in Wake's 12 starts this year if we win tonight.

    Sidenote: Wake also has a higher percent  of his inherited runners allowed to score than any other Sox starter. His ERA could easily be under 4.00 with just a tiny bit of luck. (Yes, I know, all pitchers have some tough luck behind them, but my observations show Wake seems to have had more than his share this year.)

    ya i laugh when i read posts about how we are so lucky to have wake and how reliable he is. Ya we cand depend on him alright, to allow 5+ runs to mediocre teams and kill the bullpen. Wake got lucky that the offense bailed him out tonight. I would say its become pretty evident what the sox biggest need at the deadline is. we have beckett, lester will be back soon, and then its a crap chute from there on out. Buchholz is potentially out for the season and we cannot rely on wake, lackey and miller to fill out the rotation unless we plan on playing .400 baseball for the rest of the season. Mr.Inepstien needs to get on the phone Mr.O'dowd and get ubaldo jimenez some new sox.

    Almost every team needs a 6th starter, many need up to 10.

    Look at IP per GS for all Sox starters.

    Look where Wake rates.

    I always supported Wake, even starting threads as early as 2009 on why he should remain a regular starter (comparing him to Phil Niekro in terms of potential as a 40+ something knuckleballer). In the end he should be left in the 5 spot for the remainder of the season, and Boston should cut him loose in the off-season. Hard choices need to be made and unlike 2009 or even 2010 Mr. Wake will only become less effective.


    There is not any contradiction above, just reality.

    You could be right. However, I don't think it would hurt any team to invite a guy like Wake back to ST the next year, as long as he understands he might end up as #6 again.

    Things may change after we see how Wake ends up.

    I hope we don't keep him just for "the record".

    I do think he may still be effective next year. He already put up his best 50 straight starts after age 42 already, so who knows...

    If he's a couple of wins short of the record, bring him back.
    Even with diminishing returns, he's still a viable option to the alternatives.

    Well, he has value at cheap cost, that's what you're missing. With the exception of last year, Wakefield has provided either moderately or significantly higher numbers than the league average in WAR and ERA+ for many years. This season, he has a positive WAR, which is good, but his ERA+ is below league average. They are taking a gamble, especially because of the hurt starters, that he will end up in the positive for both. That shows he worth it because, even if he gives you slightly above average returns, that's excellent for what cost he represents to the Sox. Will a player that gets a ton more in money necessarily do better than Wake? Last year, yes it seems because his value numbers were bad, but this year they are right in the middle, so it is tough.

    Ya i would say wake has value if we could keep him in the minors until we need him but having him on the major league roster hurts the team because he takes up a spot that could be used for someone who could actually contribute out of the bullpen. And as a result with wake on the roster we are playing with a 6 man pen. And at this point all he is is a 5+ era waste of space. I respect wake and all he has done for the sox throughout his career, but part of being a team player and respecting the team you play for is putting the team first and not your own personal accolades. The only reason wake is still playing is so he can become the sox all-time win leader. But in reality all he his doing is hurting the team in the process. All you have to do is look at him play the game. He cant field his position, he looks out of shape, and continues to post poor numbers. So in that regard i have lost some respect for wake.
